Kerry Morris, the pseudonym for Matthew Dellamano's musical endeavors, is an American singer/songwriter originally from Collinsville, Illinois.[1] Kerry Morris identifies his musical style as rap, hip hop, crunk, pop, and instrumental artist.
Kerry Morris is most noted for his 2004 debut independent release of the album "Take a Ride", which grew to underground cult status in the St. Louis music scene after burned copies of the album were distributed by artists and fans alike. Copies of "Take A Ride" appear to still be in circulation and drawing homegrown, casual interest as recently as 2018.
Kerry Morris has also released an instrumental album in 2011 under the moniker of DirtyFresh.[2]
Artistry
Musical Style
Known for his minimalist musical style and experimental production noted in his 2004 debut album "Take a Ride", Morris delivers a soul-wrenching commentary on love, grief, and the emotional toll of heartbreak, as well as the uplifting and revitalizing nature of partying. Kerry Morris' later release of the single Soliloquy in 2011, while not garnering the same underground attention that Take a Ride enjoyed, demonstrated the maturation of Morris as a musician and vocalist while keeping the essence of Morris' familiar subject matter of unrequited love and the yearning for acceptance.
Artistic Influences
Kerry Morris is quoted as saying in his Soundclick profile that his biggest influences are "Boyz II Men, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Usher".[3] Morris also identified several other artists as inspiration for his work as DirtyFresh, which include "The Neptunes, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis".[4]
Origin of Pseudonym
Dellamano reported to Soundclick for an artist biography in which he detailed the origins of the Kerry Morris moniker. Morris stated that "My Dad used to work with a guy named Kerry and one of my favorite artists are Boyz II Men in which two of the members have the last name Morris".[5]
As noted in the DirtyFresh Soundclick biography, Morris states that the moniker "DirtyFresh was a term that was coined about six years ago (2004) during the recording of Kerry Morris' "Take a Ride". DFC is just an inside joke after the name of one of DirtyFresh's rap songs."[6]
Artist Equipment
Kerry Morris identifies that he uses "Pro Tools, AKG 240, and various synths" for his studio equipment in creating his music.[7][8]
Live Performance
Morris is quoted to say that his favorite locale and performance location is Divas and Rockstars, a karaoke bar located in West Fargo, North Dakota.[9] According to the Foursquare.com, Divas and Rockstars is no longer in business.[10][11]
Local musicians that have attended a Kerry Morris concert have reported that Morris' live performance included playing his music through a boombox radio that was played through the house public address system via a simple vocal microphone. Interest begun to grow, once again, after several local musicians uncovered the Take a Ride album in a collection of local music.
Kerry Morris, when asked if he performs live shows, stated "Occasionally I do live shows" in his Soundclick artist profile.[12] Although noted in the DirtyFresh artist profile, when asked about live performances, Morris stated "Not Yet. It's in the works",[13] it is believed that Morris has retired from live performance.
