Kevin John Blok (born 13 January 1956 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada) is a teacher of Yoshinkan Aikido[1]. He is currently ranked 9th Dan with the Martial Arts International Federation (MAIF)[2] and 8th Dan with the Aikido Yoshinkai Foundation (AYF) in Japan.[3]

Yoshinkan Aikido Training[edit]

Kevin Blok was first introduced to Aikido by Takashi Kushida Sensei in 1974 during an Aikido demonstration at the University of Windsor. He continued studying under Kushida Sensei until 1990 taking classes in Windsor and travelling to Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan where he completed seven 20 month intensive instructor courses in addition to daily classes.

It was through Kushida Sensei that Blok was introduced to Gozo Shioda Sōke (founder and chief instructor for Yoshinkai Aikido). Blok also took instruction directly from Shioda Sōke, travelling to Japan numerous times between 1979 and 1990. He was an Uchi-deshi (live-in student) at the Yoshinkan Aikido headquarters in Tokyo, Japan in 1979.

Yoshinkan Aikido Career[edit]

Kevin Blok opened the Chudokan Dojo in Windsor, Ontario Canada in 1982, teaching Aikido, Japanese weaponry and control and defensive tactics training.

Kevin Blok was awarded the rank of Kudan (9th degree black belt) by the Martial Arts International Federation in 2014.[2] He was also given the teaching title of Hanshi in 2014 by the MAIF.[2]

Current teaching[edit]

Blok continues to teach at the Chudokan Dojo in Windsor, Ontario Canada. He instructs and oversees classes in regular Aikido, Kenshu (advanced training), Iaido (Japanese sword study), Aiki Buki (Aikido using weapons), and control and defensive tactics training.

Awards, honors and positions[edit]

Outside of Aikido, Kevin Blok obtained a Master of Science, psychology diploma from California Coast University in 2008.[4] In 2016, he was inducted into the Canadian Black Belt Hall of Fame.[5]
