Kevin Kariuki is a Kenyan chartered electrical engineer (UK) trained in Nairobi and UK — UMIST and a fellow, Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET). He is currently the Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate & Green Growth, at African Development Bank Group.[1] Kariuki's career has spanned more than 30 years in areas of power systems development, renewable energy development, strategic energy partnerships, policy and regulation.

He was a 1996 joint-winner of the Institution of Electrical Engineers Premium Award (highest award globally by the IEE/IET in a year).  

Early life and education[edit]

Kevin Kariuki was born and raised in Kenya. He completed his secondary education at St. Patrick's High School, Iten. He attended the University of Nairobi, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1988. He studied at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, obtaining an MSc. in Electrical Power Engineering in 1991, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Reliability of Power Systems in 1995. He holds a diploma in General Management from Kenya Institute of Management.

Career[edit]

Kevin Kariuki started his career at Kenya Power and Lighting Company in Nairobi before joining Electricity Regulatory Board predecessor Electricity Regulatory Commission as chief power engineer and consumer affairs manager. Kariuki is accredited for successful leading development of over US$1.75 billion of privately financed infrastructure projects, including Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, in his position as head of infrastructure at the Industrial Promotion Services Kenya Ltd (IPS) arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) and formerly as a consultant with Midlands Power International (predecessor to Cinergy Global Power).[2]

He has served on boards of several organizations including the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed Consolidated Infrastructure Group (CIG) where he is a non-executive board member and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) where he was Chairman of the Board from 2012 to 2013.[3] He is a passionate, and frequent global speaker in international forums, on private sector participation in infrastructure, including public-private partnership (PPP) schemes.[4][5][6]

Kariuki was appointed the vice president in charge of the African Development Bank's activities in the areas of power, energy, climate and green growth for both public and private sectors effective April 2020.[7] He replaces Amadou Hott, who is serving as Minister of Economy, Planning and International Cooperation of Senegal.
