Music career[edit]

The beginning, he followed alternative rock, but by the age of 13, he started following Hip Hop culture and started to do rap covers for other artists’ songs. Since then, he has had the dream of being a famous rap artist in Sri Lanka. By that time Sri Lankan rap industry wasn’t so big and Rapping wasn’t very familiar to Sri Lankan people. So from the start, Kevin knew that his journey isn’t going to be easy.

He wanted to bring a real change to the Sri Lankan music industry. So he started practicing and sharpening his vocal and lyrical skills as a rapper. In the year 2012 Kevin joined with a rap crew named “Rusthiyadu Padanama” and did his first musical collaboration as a rapper and as his stage name he used SMOKIO.The year of 2014, Smokio became a member of an upcoming rap crew named “duty 4 Four” (44 Kalliya) and started his music career as a professional rapper.

Through 44 kalliya, Smokio had the chance to meet the famous music producer Iraj. By seeing Smokio’s talents Mr. Iraj invited Smokio to sign with his record label. So the year of 2016, Smokio joined Illinois records and released his first single and the most hit song of his career “Mudukkuwen Eliyata”[4]

This song made a turning point in the Sri Lankan music industry and mainly in the rap industry. With his raw and realistic lyrics, Smokio earned the love of the youth. This song created a very loyal fan base around him and most of them started following his fashions and the lifestyle too.

Being famous led Smokio to a very explicit lifestyle. After few years of grinding his life, Smokio decided to get clean, and he went to a rehabilitation center.

After the treatments, Smokio trained as a staff member at the same rehabilitation center and started doing programs for drug-addicted youth. After spending 2 1/2 years in a rehabilitation center, he comes back to the music industry in the year 2020 as Kevin Smokio and did the real hit song “Liya Liya” which is produced by Chamath Sangeeth and featured by famous singer Dilki Uresha.

With this song, Kevin Smokio inspired the Sri Lankan youth as a survivor. And became a role model to them by stepping away from drugs and from his explicit lifestyle.

And now Kevin Smokio is a professional and an independent Rap Artist in Sri Lanka.

In his lyrics, he mostly speaks about street life, poverty, the struggle of life, and various social issues. With his experience, Kevin Smokio touched the hearts of the youth.

At the moment Kevin Smokio is the most featured rap artist in Sri Lanka and has millions of views for every song.

As a young artist now Kevin Smokio is making sure to make useful and inspirational music to his fans. With the motto of “Dreams Has To Come True” his purpose is to show people if someone has the urge to make their dream a reality, then no one can stop them and also there’s nothing in this world that they can’t do if they have the courage and determination.
