Khaled Alharbash (in Arabic: خالد الهربش) is a Syrian journalist and liberal activist.

Early life

Khaled Alharbash was born on 20 July 1993 in the city of Hama in central Syria.

Activity in the Syrian uprising

In early 2011, Alharbash helped lead the nonviolent protest movement in Hama, a northern city that was once the heart of the Syrian revolution. But as the regime responded to the demonstrations with brutal force, arresting him and many of his friends, and members of his group broke off to join the Free Syrian Army, Alharbash found himself drifting away.[1]

He moved to Damascus in 2012, where he continued to engage in political activism with Building the Syrian State Current (In Arabic: تيار بناء الدولة السورية), a non-violent liberal opposition party whose members organize meetings and democracy-building workshops among Syrian youth in hopes of building an inclusive foundation for a post-Assad government.[2] After the Syrian army controlled his city and prevented any demonstration, he started working in the political field as a media spokesman.[3][4]

During his work with Building the Syrian State Current, Alharbash helped many young people who fought with the regime to stop fighting and join the civil movement.[5] He also organized many relief campaigns to help people displaced from areas where battles took place between the Syrian regime and the opposition.

Career

He began his career in 2012 working as a news editor at Sham FM radio (in Arabic: شام إف إم). In 2013, Alharbash began working as a correspondent for Radio Sawa[6][7] and Radio Rozana.[8] He also wrote for many other Arabic and international websites, such as Raseef22, a center for thought and public affairs.

In 2014, Alharbash began working with Radio Rozana as an editor and community manager, a position he still holds. He also works with Al-Monitor as a correspondent.[9] and as a social media consultant for many Syrian media and organizations.

Education

Khaled Alharbash holds a Bachelor of Law from Al-Baath University in Homs, and a certificate in social training from the British Council. Alharbash speaks German, English, and Arabic.
