Khatai Tabrizi (Azerbaijani: Xətai Təbrizi) — Azerbaijani poet of the 15th century[1]
Life and art
The years of birth and death of Khatai Tabrizi are unknown. Little is known about the poet's life.[2]. In the 80–90s of the 15th century, Tabrizi wrote the *masnavi* (poem) "Yusuf and Zuleikha" and dedicated it to the ruler of the Ak-Koyunlu state, Sultan Yagub, who himself wrote poetry in Azerbaijani[3]. The poem "Yusuf and Zuleikha" is considered one of the first poems in the Azerbaijani language.[2]. The language of the work is simple and shows that Khatai Tabrizi was familiar with both folk oral literature and classical oriental literature. Six samples of the poem’s manuscript are stored in the Manuscript Fund of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. On the basis of these manuscripts, a scientific-critical text of the poem was compiled.[2].
