The Khawlhring (also Khawlring) are one of the minor clans (Awzia) of the Mizo people of Mizoram, northeastern India.[1][2] The Khawlhring are subdivided into the sub-clans Midang, Leidir, Pialtel, Lungen, Thlaute, Milai, Parte, Rawlchhim, and Chhunthang.[2] According to Mizo oral tradition, the Khawlhring once held a large village at Hringfa in the Chin Hills of present-day Myanmar, before being invaded and displaced by the Haka (a Chin group).[2] Following their displacement, the Khawlhring migrated westward and took refuge in the settlement of Zopui under the protection of the Sailo chief Lallula, who was consolidating power in the Lushai Hills at the time.[3] As one of the eleven minor clans collectively known as Awzia, the Khawlhring generally fell under the political authority of Sailo chiefs during the pre-colonial and colonial periods, though they retained their own sub-clan identity and customs.[4] In contemporary Mizoram, the Khawlhring have adopted the common Mizo language (Duhlian) while maintaining their clan identity.[1]
