Kheerganga

Kheerganga is a high altitude meadow situated in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh,India.The meadow has come up as a go to tourist destination in the state. It falls within the Parvati Valley. The valley gets its name from the lush green nature of the surrounding mountains. It has a natural hot water spring which differentiates it from the other similar areas in the vicinity. It falls on the way to the Pin-Parvati Pass Trek route[1]. Height:2690 meter[2] The Kheerganga hot water spring is easily among one of the most visited natural hot water springs in India. And certainly, the most visited highest hot water spring in India. It is a geothermal spring which is located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. It is said that Parvati who was the wife of Lord Shiva, lived near the Mantalai Lake which is the source of the Parvati river. So her so Kartik would come to the hot water spring located in Kheerganga to take a bath. There is a dedicated temple near the spring, which is visited by a lot of people there.

The Kheerganga area was essentially just another pit stop on the way to Pin-Parbati Pass earlier. With the onset of Hippie culture in the valley during the 80’s.The remote areas of the valley became as a go to recreational areas for Hippie people. The ecological pressure in these fragile areas started building from back then. Slowly with the onset of information and technology age the indian youth got to know of these hidden away areas and started treating them as weekend getaways, which has led to further degradation of these areas.

Camping is technically not allowed in Kheerganga as it falls under the larger , Great Himalayan National Park. Which is a protected forest area under the Indian Law and camping at such places is punishable by fine or imprisonment. However because of the economic stimulus Kheerganga brinks to the area camping activities are ignored and commercial camping setups have been established in the area by multiple locals.

The Kheerganga trek starts from the Barsheini, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. The motorable road ends at Barshaini and the path to Kheerganga from Barshaini is 12 Kilometers. It takes 6 hour to reach Kheerganga from Barshaini. There are two routes for this popular trek. One goes through Kalga village and the other goes through Nakthan Village.
