On May 21, 2021, Aiden Leos, age 6, was shot and killed on the 55 Freeway in the city of Orange, California, United States. Police have described the killing as an incident of road rage.[2]

Shooting[edit]

Aiden Anthony Leos (born May 12, 2015)[3] was traveling to kindergarten in the rear seat of a car being driven by his mother. Another motorist cut off the vehicle on the northbound side of State Route 55, in Orange, southeast of Los Angeles. Aiden's mother reacted by flipping the driver. A gunman in the passenger seat of the suspect's vehicle opened fire into their car and a bullet struck Aiden in the back, killing him.[4]

Arrests[edit]

On June 6, 2021, members of the California Highway Patrol arrested Marcus Anthony Eriz, age 24, and his girlfriend, Wynne Lee, age 23, in connection with the death.[5]

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer indicated that Lee was driving the car and Eriz, her front-seat passenger, fired the gun.[6]

Both appeared in court on June 18, pleading not guilty to the charges against them.[7]

Legacy[edit]

Officials plan to dedicate a plaque at the Orange County Zoo's new facility, currently under construction, in memory of Leos. A news conference was held on June 14, 2021, attended by government representatives, zoo personnel, and Leos's family.[8]

Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner issued the following statement: "My office offered to dedicate this new facility in the name of Aiden Leos, so we could leave a legacy that inspires the people of Orange County to rally for justice, give support for victims of crime, and encourage the reporting of information that may solve a crime for another family."[7]
