On June 14, 2026, Kohen Kartier Wiley, a 1-year-old African American boy, was fatally shot by police during a shoplifting call in Senatobia, Mississippi, United States. The officer involved in the incident was placed on leave, but was not immediately identified by police.
Incident
Police officers from the Senatobia police department and Tate County sheriff’s office responded to a shoplifting call at a Walmart in Senatobia.[1] When arriving, the officers saw two adults and a child fleeing from the store into a vehicle. The driver drove in the direction of the officers, nearly hitting one of them, and one of the officers opened fire on the vehicle, killing Wiley and injuring another woman.[2]
Aftermath
The officer who shot at the vehicle was placed on leave, and an investigation by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety into the him began.[3][4] Police Sergeant Hunter Foster was not immediately identified as one of the officers involved, but was later identified in public records.[5] A police statement acknowledged that officers were aware of Wiley before the officer opened fire on the vehicle.[6]
A rally for Wiley was held on June 16 outside Senatobia City Hall, calling for the release of the body camera footage of the incident.[7]
Preliminary autopsy
A preliminary autopsy requested by the family of Wiley was preformed, and found that Wiley was likely shot from the side of the car. Attorney Ben Crump represented the family.[8]
