Kim Dong-hyuk (Korean: ๊น€๋™ํ˜; born January 3, 1997), also known by the stage name DK, is a South Korean singer and a member of the South Korean boy group iKON.[1][2][3] After competing in two survival programs, WIN: Who Is Next and Mix & Match, in 2013 and 2014, respectively, he officially debuted in 2015 with iKON.[4][5]

Early life[edit]

DK was born Kim Dong-hyuk on January 3, 1997, in Seoul, South Korea.[2] During middle school, he attended DEF Dance Skool, and in February 2012, he auditioned and won the 9th JYP Trainee Search.[6][7] Following the audition, he remained a JYP trainee for a short time.[6] Within the same year, he attended a YG Entertainment audition and was officially recruited and joined the label as a trainee on November 5, 2012. Later in 2018, he was also revealed to have been a trainee at SM Entertainment.[7]

2013โ€“2014: Pre-debut - WIN: Who Is Next and Mix & Match[edit]

In 2013, Kim participated in the reality survival show WIN: Who is Next as a member of Team B. The show concluded with Team A winning the program and Team B returning to continue the training under the YG label.[8] A year after, in 2014, Team B competed again in the second reality survival show, Mix & Match, under YG Entertainment, which resulted in all Team B members debuted alongside trainee Jung Chan-woo, under the name iKON.[9]

2015โ€“Present: iKON, Choreography, Songwriting[edit]

On September 15, 2015, iKON released a warm-up single โ€œMy Typeโ€, followed by lead singles โ€œRhythm Taโ€ and โ€œAirplaneโ€.[10] Kim Dong-hyuk took part in choreographing for the first time for the song โ€œAirplaneโ€.[11]. The group then released its debut album โ€Welcome Backโ€ on December 24, 2015.

In March 2017, together with Katie Kim, Donghyuk featured in the song โ€œSecretโ€ from bandmate Bobbyโ€™s studio album Love and Fall, for which he is also credited as the co-lyricist.[12]

Following the debut album, iKON released a new album series under the name New Kids, starting with New Kids: Begin album in 2017, Return album with its song of the year โ€œLove Scenarioโ€ in January 2018, New Kids: Continue and New Kids: the Final in August and October 2018 respectively.

As a choreographer, Donghyuk has been active in choreographing parts for several songs in iKONโ€™s discography, such as Killing Me, Freedom, Cocktail, and Best Friend. In addition to that, he has also choreographed iKONโ€™s stage performances in 2018 Sugarman 2 โ€œEverything to Youโ€, 2018 iKONโ€™s MMA Intro Stage, and 2019 iKONโ€™s Year End Concert.[13]

On February 6, 2020, iKON released their third EP, i Decide, which included five tracks with Dive as the lead single.[14] Kim debuted as songwriter and record producer of โ€œFlowerโ€ ((๋„ˆ๋ž€ ๋ฐ”๋žŒ ๋”ฐ๋ผ; neolan balam ttala; lit. Follow the wind that is you), one of the sidetrack singles, in which he also choreographed their dance performances.[15][16][17] During its release, โ€œFlowerโ€ (๋„ˆ๋ž€ ๋ฐ”๋žŒ ๋”ฐ๋ผ) ranked 1st in MelOn Ballad Category and 28th on iChart.

Prior to โ€œFlowerโ€, Kim has been active in composing and songwriting, one of them being โ€œSurf", in which he was credited alongside with Bobby.[18] They performed the song together at 2018 iKON private stages and 2019 Japan concerts, however, this song is yet to be released officially to this date.

As the main dancer of iKON, Donghyuk has released several dance covers, the most notable being โ€œDK x The Kinjazโ€, which was released on October 18, 2018, as an endorsement to YG X Academy.[19] Together with the famed duo from worldwide dancers and choreographers, Anthony Lee and Vinh Nguyen, they performed to Andy Mineo and Lecrae "Coming in Hot".

On May 11, 2020, he released another dance cover, presently with bandmate Jin-hwan in "JAY X DK", performing to Tyga's "Ayy Macarena".[20]

In January 2021, Kim featured again in bandmate Bobbyโ€™s second album Lucky Man, with the song titled "Ur Soul Ur Body".[21]

On March 3, 2021, iKON returned with the new digital single โ€œWhy Why Why" in which he also took part in choreographing the song's chorus.[22][23]

In April 2021, iKON participated in Kingdom: Legendary War, a competition show alongside five other K-pop boy groups. Kim reportedly was actively involved in planning the production, directing the performance, and recording sessions for iKON's stages. He was given recognition for his versatility and contribution for iKON and the unit and special performances, from the introduction to the finale vocal stage.[24][25]

Starting December 2021, Donghyuk is actively hosting 2 radio programs, iKON Day at Station Z 89.1 and iKON's Zero Zone Diary, with the latter, is focusing on educating and advancing sustainability.
