Kim Jae-hwan (born May 27, 1996)..[1] is a South Korean singer. He is the main vocalist of South Korean boy band Wanna One.

Kim Jae-hwan is the only individual trainee who became a debut member of Wanna One. He is also the only individual trainee who has made his debut in the history of Producer 101 series. He finished fourth in Produce 101 Season 2 with total votes 1.051.735[2].

2012: Korea's Got Talent 2[edit]

Jae-hwan came as semifinalist on Koreaโ€™s Got Talent 2 in 2012. Although he failed in the first audition in Daegu, he got another chance to took second audition in Seoul which was given by judge Kim Gu-ra.

2014: ShelRock Band[edit]

Jae-hwan was a member of disbanded band called ShelRock.

In late 2014, singer Baek Ji-young moved agencies from WS Entertainment and signed with Music Works, a sub-label under CJ E&M. It was reported that she will be producing a new hybrid band called ShelRock[7] who are expected to debut in early 2015 under Music Works.[8]

Unfortunately, in August 2015 the agency announced their disbandment news through their official Facebook Page.[9]

2016: Vocal War: God's Voice[edit]

Shortly after Jae-hwan left his agency, he got invited to appeared on new music program about amateurs facing of pro singers called Vocal War: God's Voice.[10]

In the pilot episode, after captivated the audience with his performance Beautiful Truth by Boohwal, Jae-hwan got chance to challenged the pro singers in the next round. For the next round, he chose Yoon Do-hyun as his opponent. Jae-hwan came out as the winner with his performance Autumn in Front of the Post Office by Yoon Do-hyun.[11]

After God's Voice became a regular program, Jae-hwan came again and made his second appearance. He challenged Lena Park with his performance Sorry by Lena Park[12]. Although he received so many praises by the audience and pro singers, he lose against her.

2017: Produce 101 Season 2[edit]

Jae-hwan was one of the five individual trainees in the competition. The individual trainee means the contestant is competing independently without the support from an agency.

On the first episode, Jae-hwan performed Hey Mama! by EXO CBX with 2 other individual trainees[13][14] and ranked in B class by the mentors. With his background as the winner of the pilot episode of SBS Vocal War: Godโ€™s Voice, vocal mentor Lee Seok-hoon requested him for another individual performance. Through this, Jae-hwan got another chance to show his vocal ability by singing Skyfall by Adele[15][16]

Pledis Entertainmentโ€™s Hwang Min-hyun chose Jae-hwan as one of the members of Sorry Sorry Team #2 for group battle performance.[17][18] The final team was dubbed as Justice League by the other trainees and considered as strong as Avengers Team (another strong team formed by BNMโ€™s Lee Dae-hwi). He gained recognition for his strong vocal after took part as a main vocal and sang one of the famous lines[19][20] by Super Juniorโ€™s Yesung. The nickname ์ˆœ์–ผ๋ฐฉ์Œ (Innocent Face, Explosive Vocal/IFEV) was given to him by his fans because of this performance.[21]

In position evaluation performance, Jae-hwan being chosen as the centre.[22][23] Not only got to experienced as the centre, Jae-hwan also got his first win as an individual.

Based on the result of votes taken by national producers, Jae-hwan was chosen as the member of Never team for concept evaluation performance. Never is a deep house song produced by Triple H. Even though the Never team had a massive change in members, Jae-hwan could maintain his position as the main vocal. Jae-hwan also got praised by the mentors and the producers after shown his stable performance by singing and dancing at the same time even though he never trained as an idol before[24][25]. This Never performance by Nationโ€™s Son is considered as one of the iconic performances in Produce 101 Season 2 along with Open Up by Knock[26]

Jae-hwan managed to secure his spot along with other 19 trainees left until the last episode. In debut evaluation performance, he proposed to be the main vocal of Hands on Me team. In the end, MMOโ€™s Kang Daniel finalized the team with Jae-hwan as the main vocal.[27]

Jae-hwan came as fourth with total votes 1.051.735[28][29] and became the debut member of Wanna One. He is also the only individual trainee who got debuted in the history of Produce 101 series.

2017 - present: Wanna One[edit]

Jae-hwan made his debut as main vocalist of South Korean boy band Wanna One on August 7, 2017[37][38][39]. He will be promoting as Wanna One member until December 31, 2018[40][41][42]. Unlike the other members, Jae-hwan promotes in Wanna One as a free agent.

On August 8, 2017, Jae-hwan signed with CJ E&M[43][44][45] and will be their exclusive artist after Wanna One promotion ends.

2017: Immortal Songs 2[edit]

Jae-hwan became the first Wanna One member who appeared by himself in Immortal Songs after Wanna One appearance in DJ DOCโ€™s special.[46][47] In September 2017, he participated in 2 episodes of Singer Lee Mi-jaโ€™s special[48][49] and performed Goose Daddy in the second episode[50]. He defeated by musical singer Min Woo-hyuk who got total votes 420.

In November 2017, Jae-hwan participated again by himself in Composer Yoon Il-sangโ€™s special[51]. Accompanied by guitarist Jeok-jae, he performed Forget You by Yoon Do-hyun Band.[52] With total votes 423, he won against singer Koonzo in round 3 and singer DK in round 4. However, his winning streak was broken by Son Seung-yeon who got total votes 440.

2018: King of Mask Singer[edit]

In April 2018, Jae-hwan became a buzz in social media and his name was ranked first in Naver[53] along with keywords King of Mask Singer, Royal Guard, and If You.

A contestant called Royal Guard appeared on episode 149 of King of Mask Singer. He performed a duet stage with another contestant called Chief Gatekeeper[54] with song If You by Big Bang and advanced to round 2 after won against Chief Gatekeeper with total votes 67.

In round 2, Royal Guard performed a song Fool by Park Hyo-shin against a contestant called Cherry Blossom Girl.[55] With total votes 79, he was won and secured his spot for round 3.

After performed a sad ballad in round 2, Royal Guard faced another winner from round 2 called Comb-pattern Pottery with an up-beat song Don't Touch Me by Ailee.[56] He got another win again with total votes 68 and advanced to the final round.

Unfortunately, he couldn't take over the throne from the The East Invincibility, the Mask King from 71st generation[57]. At the end of the show, Royal Guard had to reveal his identity who turned out to be Jae-hwan[58]. This show also marked the reunion of Jae-hwan and panellist Kim Gu-ra after Korea's Got Talent 2 six years ago.
