Kim Jautze, born 5 March 1986, is a Dutch teacher and content creator. She is known for her YouTube channel Dutchies to be.[1] – Learn Dutch with Kim. Besides making videos, she makes self-study courses in her online school[2] Before she started creating videos (which was in August 2019), she worked as a PhD student in a project called “The Riddle of Literary Quality[3]. She started her position as a PhD student right after finishing her Masters (“Comparative Dutch studies”) in 2012, but due to a burn-out she decided to quit in 2016. It was then that she discovered her passion for teaching, and she became a Dutch language teacher (NT2-docent).
Early life[edit]
Kim Jautze was born on 5 March 1986 as Kimberly Johanna van der Toorn, in Alphen aan den Rijn. It was only after a year that she got her fathers’ surname Jautze. She went to school in Alphen aan den Rijn and moved to Leiden to start at university when she was 20. She studied “Dutch linguistics and literature” in Leiden where she got her bachelor’s degree and enrolled in the research Masters “Comparative Dutch studies”, which took place partially in Amsterdam, partially in Berlin.
Kim only started university when she was 20, because after her graduation (which was at the age 18), she became severely ill and got hospitalized for a while. After some weeks of examinations, specialists in Leiden diagnosed her with the auto-immune disease, which is a very rare form of rheumatoid arthritis. Kim needed about two years to recover from her sickbed and therefore started her university career at 20 years old. She needed to take medications for the coming decade, but fortunately, at the moment, it’s in remission.
Academic career[edit]
In 2012, Kim Jautze started her academic career as a linguist (PhD student) at the Huygens Institute[4] in Den Haag. She participated in the project “The Riddle of Literary Quality”[5] and examined if you can measure literary quality with computational methods. Her fellow project members and she published several articles on the matter, which you can find on her research blog[6].
For her dissertation, Kim wanted to focus specifically on the Dutch genre “literaire thrillers” and her research question was: “How literary is the “literaire thriller?”[7]. Unfortunately, she had to terminate her research in 2016 because of a burn-out.
Language teacher & content creator[edit]
In 2017, Kim changed her career path and started to teach Dutch to foreigners (NT2). After working for only half a year at a language school, she started working for herself. As a hobby she started to make some videos in 2019 which she published to YouTube[8]. Her channel was first called “Linguanl”, but soon she changed the name to “Dutch Language Academy” because she thought it was more obvious to students what her channel was about. However, early 2020 she almost got sued because someone else was (unjustly) claiming to actively use that name, and she got forced to change the name of her business. She then chose the name “Dutchies to be – Learn Dutch with Kim”. Kim also makes self-study courses which students can buy in her online school[9]
Personal life[edit]
Kim Jautze doesn’t share much about her personal life, but we know she is a vegetarian, and that she loves cats, yoga, biking, sunsets at the beach, travelling, learning Spanish, eating, and red wine. Recently, she discovered her passion for dancing.
