Biography[edit]

Cariou was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to working class parents of European and Métis heritage.[3] He joined the Communist Party of Canada in 1972 while studying at the University of Alberta, amidst growing opposition to the Vietnam War.[4] After completing his studies, he returned to Saskatchewan and served as the Communist Party of Canada's provincial leader for some time during the 1980s. In 1993, Cariou and his family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he became the editor of People's Voice.[3]

Electoral record[edit]

Cariou has been a perennial candidate for the federal election in Vancouver Kingsway and provincial election in British Columbia since the 1990s.[5]
