Company History[edit]
Kinahan’s Irish Whiskey is a distiller of Irish whiskey, founded in Ireland in 1779.[1] [2] [3]
Founder of the enterprise was Daniel Kianahan (1756-1827). Business first opened at 12 Trinity street (1779). In forty years company, at that time known as "Kinahan Son & Smith", moved into Carlisle Building (1819).[4]
L.L. letters in a brand stand for "Lord Lieutenant's Whisky". The mark arose when Duke of Richmond, who was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Kinahan's customer, instructed to set apart a vat of whiskey for his personal use and paint it with dual coronet and LL letters.[5] [6]
Brand was managed by Kinahan's family for four generations. Daniel died in 1827 and his son Robert Henry took charge over business.[7]
Kinahan's was registered as LLC(Limited Liability Company) in 1890. Three of five directors were cousins: Sir Edward Hudson-Kinahan, Thomas William Kinahan (1839-1920), and George Kinahan (1823-1903), who was a partner and company chairman at that time.[8]
King Edward granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment to the company as purveyors to his household. Queen Victoria followed with the same decision in 1845 and 1886. In April 1900 Queen Victoria came to Dublin and L.L. whiskey was the only Irish Whiskey supplied for official events.[9] [10]
George Kinahan dies at 1903 closing a century of company's history.[11]
Difficult times came to the whole industry. Irish whiskies exports to England declined during 1900-1914. By 1924 most Scottish and Irish small independent distillers were taken over by giant companies.[12]
Mixology Culture[edit]
In 1862 Jerry Thomas, considered "the father of American mixology", featured Kinahan's Irish whiskey in his recipes in the first drink book published in the United States - "How to Mix Drinks". [13]
His recipe of hot Irish whiskey recommended to use "Kinahan's or Jameson's whiskey".[14]
In 1888 George H. Jessop described a group of Irish-Americans sitting in a San Francisco bar and enjoying hot irish whiskey a la Kinahan instead of a la Jameson. [15]`
Whiskey Craft Innovations[edit]
- Kinahan’s Kasc Project:
Custom "hybrid" casks made of five types of wood: Portuguese Oak, American Oak, French Oak, Hungarian Oak, Chestnut. Irish whiskey regulations allow spirit to be matured in wood rather than in oak only.[16] [17] [18]
