King Mats
Mathangu Stewart Sphelele (born July 31, 1994) better known by his stage name as King Mats, is a Ugandan MC[1], TV Host, and Club Hype man. He is the deputy chairman of House of Emcees Uganda limited, a body that collects all Ugandan MCs together.
His radio show ‘The Xfm Xplosion’ at 98.4 xfm which is co-hosted by DJ Ali Breezy, is an award-winning[2] musical and the most listened-to radio show in Kampala.
Earlier life
King Mats was born in Kitintale, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda. He was born to a South African revolutionary soldier Bongani Mlaba[3] and a Muganda mother Nansubuga Mary Sylvia. He attended Rev. John Academy for primary level, Crane High School and Najeera High School for ordinary level, and Progressive Secondary School Kitintale for advanced level. He later pursued a diploma in national journalism and mass communication at UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication located in Nakulabye, Kampala, Uganda. He started MCing at Progressive Secondary School where he was appointed as the head boy of the school and as the official hype man for all events that happened at school.
Career
In 2016, after school, he worked at a betting company for a year.
After being discovered by MC Kats, he left the betting company in 2017 and became the junior manager to one of Uganda’s celebrated female singers, Fille Mutoni.[citation needed]
In 2018, he landed his first MCing job at Next Media’s NBS Television as a host of "The Mix Up" show which rebranded to Youth Voice and airs from
In 2020, he joined the renowned industrial area-based Urban TV Uganda to host The Trans-night Show, a musical show that entertained Ugandans throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Later that year he got contracted to work within the same Media House, New Vision Uganda, at 94.8 Xfm to officially host an award-winning radio show the Xfm Xplosion that airs every Saturday and is co-hosted by DJ Ali Breezy.
He used MC Mats as one of his monikers but it was soon discontinued by him after he found out that there was a need to rebrand into a neutral brand, not just an MC.
He is currently working with Omziki Distribution Uganda’s only music distribution company as Music Publisher.
Discography
In 2022, He collaborated with Horace DJ, and young singers Stephy and Bilivah on an Amapiano song "Oh Uganda" which is topping the official music charts in Uganda.
