Explosion[edit]
At around 20:30 BST on 26 June 2022, an explosion occurred in a house on Dulwich Road in Kingstanding, Birmingham. It has been confirmed that the explosion was gas-related but the exact cause is currently unknown.
Casualties[edit]
On the day after the explosion, police reported that the body of a woman, who was 79, had been found in the debris.[2] Her partner suffered life-threatening injuries after being pulled from the rubble, and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Four others sustained minor injuries and were discharged at the scene.[3]
Damage[edit]
A house was entirely destroyed, with the three neighbouring terraced houses being significantly damaged. A total of six houses were reportedly damaged.[1] Immediately after the blast, there was a fire which spread to the neighbouring houses. Vehicles near the house were also damaged, with one being upended. Debris could be seen strewn across the street and in the gardens behind the house.[1]
Response[edit]
Emergency services were called at 8:38 p.m., with six West Midlands Fire Service crews, three West Midlands ambulances, a MERIT and the West Midlands Police all at the scene. As well as these, Cadent Gas and the National Grid were working to manage the incident.[4] The surrounding area was closed and evacuated, with a total of twenty-one people being evacuated from their homes and sent to accommodation like the nearby Kingstanding Inn.[1]
The sound of the explosion was reportedly heard across Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield.[5] Many videos and images were posted on social media, which showed flames, debris and damage from a brick terraced house, and aerial footage showed smoke billowing into the sky.[6]
Local Member of Parliament for Birmingham Erdington Paulette Hamilton tweeted her sympathies to the victims.[7]
