Kintone is a cloud collaboration service that provides a teamwork platform with a visual application builder to manage data and workflow for team collaboration. The U.S. headquarters is located in San Francisco, CA, and is part of Cybozu Inc., a Tokyo-based leading collaboration and office productivity public software company in Japan.

Kintone is used by more than 14,000 organizations globally, including U.S. and Global Fortune 500 organizations. Some achievements include being recognized Strong Performer in Forrester’s Wave: Low-Code Platforms for Business Developers.[1], Gartner’s Magic Quadrant: High-Productivity Application Platform as a Service (hpaPaaS)[2], and Leader in G2Crowd’s No-Code Development Platforms Software[3].

Kintone is distinctive for its focus on culture-first, which is reflected by Cybozu's own policies, which include “100 People, 100 Styles of Work” which celebrates and supports work-life balance and diversity in the workplace, and “Mama Internship Program” for women who left the workforce to raise children and now want to gradually return to work. Kintone in the U.S. and Cybozu in Japan was ranked in Great Places to Work[4].

History[edit]

Kintone platform was founded by Cybozu in 2011 as Cybozu’s first cloud-based business application platform.

By 2013, over 1,000 companies across the world used Kintone.

In 2014, Kintone decided to set up a presence in the U.S. by opening a dedicated office in San Francisco. By 2017, Kintone had over 7,500 companies building and deploying 500,000 apps.

In 2018, aligned with their vision to build a society brimming with teamwork, Kintone held their first Social Impact Challenge[5]. The live crowdfunding event recognized and rewarded individuals and teams who use technology to positively change social and environmental issues.

The following year, Kintone launched their global media site, Kintopia. The site explores broad topics of Company Culture, Future of Work and the Place of Corporations in Society.

By 2019, Gartner recognized Kintone in the Application Platform as a Service (hpaPaaS) report for the fourth year in a row, and Forrester recognized Kintone in the Low-Code Platforms for Business Developers for the second year in a row. Currently, more than 14,000 companies are using Kintone globally.

Services[edit]

Kintone provides a secure platform for data storage, team communication, and process management. The teamwork platform provides line of business users to build customized applications and create custom workflows with little to no code to fit specific business needs[6]

Data Management[edit]

The app feature allows users to create a database for storing and sharing information with team members.

Apps can be created in six ways:

  • from scratch, using the drag-and-drop visual builder
  • from the Kintone Marketplace
  • from a template file
  • from a template
  • from importing a CSV or Excel file
  • from duplicating an existing app.

Centralized Collaboration[edit]

Kintone has four primary communication methods:

  • Threads
  • Comments
  • User profile walls
  • Private messages

Teams can create Threads centered around specific projects or topics. On a specific record of an application, with the in-record comment function, users can talk about specific tasks or data records on the record itself without altering the data. Walls and private messages offer team members a way to communicate directly with one another via personal user profiles.

Workflow Management[edit]

Kintone’s workflow management allows users to create custom process and workflow assignment with little to no-code. The process management feature allows users to define necessary steps in the review and approval process and assign tasks to certain team members based on specific conditions. Team members will receive automatic notifications informing the task assignments and upcoming deadlines.

Mobile[edit]

Kintone features can be accessed through the mobile browser or iOS and Android mobile apps so users can have the same experience regardless of device.

API[edit]

Kintone provides REST APIs for manipulating apps, spaces and users and JavaScript APIs that can be called from within the JavaScript files that are uploaded to the apps. API documents are provided through the Kintone Developer Program. The program is dedicated to supporting the community of developers looking to customize Kintone. The developer website allows users to browse API documents, learn from tutorials and sample codes, post questions, share comments with other developers and Kintone engineers, and discuss a variety of developer-related topics.
