Kirk Marshall Clayton
Dr. Kirk Marshall Clayton, Ph.D., Ed.D (February 4, 1947 - January 19, 2022) was an American football, field and track athlete who was recognized by the State of Louisiana for his accomplishments in sports.
Background
The story of a life-long athlete, entrepreneur, academic, scholar, and mentor.
Track and field standout Kirk Marshall Clayton attended Woodson Junior High and Xavier Prep High School in New Orleans before transferring to Scotlandville High School in Baton Rouge where he set the national prep record with a 9.4 mark in the 100-yard dash. His abilities were key to Scotlandville’s LIALO state championship in 1965.[1]
A Life-Long Athlete
Dr. K.M. Clayton was "A Louisiana boy who went West and did well."[2] He became an athlete in football, including field and track, while attending high school in his hometown. Track and Field magazine writers noticed Clayton in May 1966.[2]
Sports scouts, journalists, and recruiters observed the High School Boys 100-yard Dash to see if any new arrivals to the sport could overturn the World Field and Track Record set by Jesse Owens.[3]
Grambling College
Clayton began his track and field history in earnest during this era while studying at Grambling College. He became associated with the Santa Clara Valley Youth Village (Speed City- II) group. After involvement with this group, Clayton moved to San Jose State University (Speed City- I).
While studying at San Jose University, Clayton met up with a coach and a life-long influencer. He gained acquaintance and the friendship of Dick Drake. Dr. Clayton stated that due to his connection with Drake, he became a better athlete and sports professional. "The heights I achieved in sports would not have been possible without the assistance and knowledge of Track and Field News and Mr. Dick Drake."[4]
Clayton recalled, "It was 55 years + one day to the day (August 24, 1966) when I called Track and field News. Mr. Dick Drake answered the phone. I proceeded to identify myself. He stopped me and said, "I know who you are." In May 1966, you were named the "King of the Century in the 100-yard dash from the Great State of Louisiana. We, T&FN, placed you atop the High school 100-Yd. Dash World List in our 1966 issue."[4] This issue has Tommie-Jet Gear-Smith on the front cover. Dr. Clayton, stated further that he still had an original copy of the T&FN 1966 publication.
San Jose University
As Clayton's conversation continued with Drake, Clayton informed Drake, "I am looking to depart from Grambling College." Drake's response was, "your timing is exceptional." "The Santa Clara Valley Youth Village, in San Jose, California is developing a Track and Field Team. They are in search of Top Track Athletes across the country. You can complement their search and be the one they will select. I believe that you possess the quintessential Track Skills the Youth Village is searching for." Clayton continues, that he proceeded to give me the Villages' as a series of contact references. The first name was Mr. Woody Lynn, Head Coach, and Mr. Don Bowden, Assistant Coach. Later, Clayton connected with the California representatives and the rest began history. Clayton arrived in San Jose, California, on September 17, 1966.
Mr. Art Simberg, an assistant with the Youth Village, was my contact. The main points of this note "are to Thank T&FN and Mr. Dick Drake for their foresight and the willingness to share this information. So too, Today, I was told, I have may 'Cancer.' So, with that in mind, "I could not, and would not, depart this Earth, without remembering Track and Field News and Mr. Dick Drake for making Kirk Marshall Clayton a Success in California and Internationally."
Moving from Louisiana to California
Clayton's move from Louisiana to California made his life in sports and his professional career in the field of Education and Leadership a success. I know Mr. Drake is no longer with us, and he is writing news for Track and Field in the sky, but Dr. Clayton wished to express his feelings and last token of respect to this human being that served to critically influence his career.

Omega Schools, Inc.(Feb 1991 – Nov 2004) McDowell Campus, Phoenix, AZ Director of Educational Services Prioritized disabled students' educational guidelines to ensure compliance and monitoring compliance standards. While serving Clayton decreased disabled student department operational costs by 20% during the first summer session. He wrote and implemented the school's disabled students Individual Educational Plan to meet the educational requirements of the DSPS Training Specialist Program and monitored its activities to ensure both students and the college were in compliance with laws governing disabled students and services.
Not unlike one of Dr. Clayton's most admired fellow athletes, Jesse Owens, he too was taken from us by aggressive cancer.
Recognition and Honors
Clayton enrolled at Grambling after graduation and became an instant success, posting the national collegiate freshman record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.3 seconds. Also in 1967, he was a member of the Santa Clara Valley Youth Village 440-yard relay team which set an American record with a mark of 39.5 seconds.[1]
Clayton transferred to San Jose State to further his track career by competing for Bud Winter’s legendary “Speed City” teams – a grouping of many of the top sprinters in the country, including many Olympians. He was an AAU All-American in 1968 and 1969. In 1970, he broke Barney Ecwell’s 31-year old indoor world record in the men’s 50-yard dash with a 5.0 second time in Calgary, Canada. He was also captain of the 1969 San Jose State team that won the NCAA Track and Field Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. The Spartans 4×440 yard relay team of Clayton, Sam Davis, Ronnie Ray Smith, and John Carlos also won the national championship with a time of 39.1 seconds. Smith and Carlos were both Olympic Gold Medalists in 1968.[1]
Clayton also qualified for the 1968 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash – a position that would have earned him a slot on the national team by current standards (2015).[1]
Dr. Clayton has also been inducted into San Jose State’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
