Kiyoshi Nakagami
Kiyoshi Nakagami (中上 清, Nakagami Kiyoshi, born 1949) is a Japanese contemporary artist known for his ethereal paintings that explore light, shadow, and the movement of pigments. His work is characterized by a unique technique that does not use brushes, but instead relies on gravity and the natural flow of acrylic paint and gold mica pigments.
Early Life and Education
Nakagami was born in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. He graduated from the Department of Painting at the Numazu Technical High School.
Artistic Style and Technique
Nakagami's paintings often evoke apocalyptic or primordial landscapes, yet they remain abstract. He is renowned for his mastery of "light," which he creates by tilting and rotating the canvas, allowing the fluid medium to find its own path.
Art critic Robert C. Morgan, writing in Asian Art News, described Nakagami's process as a sophisticated interaction with gravity and the physical properties of paint, noting that his work creates a "purified experience of light and space." Similarly, critic Donald Kuspit has noted that his paintings offer a "profound meditation on the nature of light" and an "exquisite experience of color."

Nakagami has exhibited extensively both in Japan and internationally.

- In 2008, he held a major retrospective solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura.
