Wave of Sounds (Klangwelle) 2017 Bad Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Fire effects & flame projectors.

The Klangwelle (wave of sounds) Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is a music synchronous open-air show consisting out of water, fire, laser and light. Since 2014, the show has been set up in the spa garden of Bad Neuenahr once a year. The event takes place on eight[1] evenings over two weeks[2] in October and was attended by over 16,000[3] people last year. Roland Nenzel[4] is the artistic director of the show and works in a close collaboration with show designer Mischa Anton. The Klangwelle Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is the successor of the Klangwelle Bonn, which was presented on the Münsterplatz from 2005 to 2013. The show is contractually secured until 2022[5] and will therefore remain in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler for the next few years.

Structure of the show[edit]

The show is divided into four acts plus an encore and is completely recreated every year. As a result of this redesign, the visitor can expect new effects and water animations annually. An important part of every act is the music, because it is used as a rhythm for the light-, laser-, fire- and water effects as well as the entire visual design. The music selection ranges from rock/ pop and classic to old German songs (rheinisch-kölsch). The show is complemented by a special act, which is dedicated to a special topic as well as an encore. The show starts at 08:00 pm. The entrance and the pre-program start at 06:00 pm. Before, during and after the show, a presenter guides the audience through the show and provides additional entertainment and background information. In addition to that, the presenter appears on a hydro screen from time to time.

Technology and effects[edit]

The most important part of the technical installation is the 22 meters long water basin, which contains up to 120,000 cubic meters of water. 800 movable water nozzles and 100 high-performance pumps[6] act in concert and create a wide range of water figures and water patterns. Some of the fountains reach a height of over 30 meters. Since 2016, the large fountain in the spa garden has also been equipped with additional technology and is now part of the show.

Hydroscreen[edit]

The system offers the possibility to create a water screen (hydro screen), which can be used as a screen for a projector as well as a basic artistic element during the show.

LED technology[edit]

The ultra-bright light of the LED technology with a total of 60 spotlights uses the water as a carrier medium and lets the various water effects appear before the night sky. At the same time, it colours the Klangwelle in all imaginable colours.

Laser technology[edit]

There are two groups of laser effects. The first group of lasers generate images, fonts and animations on the hydro screen. The second group radiates over the heads of the audience and creating a visual depth of over 100 meters.

Fire Effects[edit]

The flame projectors create 20 different special effects during the show. They reach several meters in height. In 2017, flame projectors were also installed for the first time in the large fountain of the Bad Neuenahr spa garden, which gives the show an even greater visual depth.

Fireworks[edit]

Fireworks are used as special accents during the show and at the end.
