Klutch is a Filipino heavy metal band from Antipolo City, Philippines, formed in 2013. The band includes vocalist Victor Montealto, guitarist/keyboardist/singer Winnie Valdes Choy, bassist Gryann Goopio Padilla, rhythm guitarist Patrick Anaviso, and drummer Christopher Gracela. They have had very few lineup changes, with Choy, Gracela, and Montealto being the only three remaining original members. Former band members are drummers Ompong Carait and Janri Valeriano, as well as cousins Johnny Linguete (bass) and Bryan Timajo Linguete (drums). They are occasionally joined onstage by ex-Skychurch and current Erectus and Blackstone Conspiracy drummer, Robert Dela Cruz. The band has released five studio singles since 2013.

Musical Style, influences, and lyrical themes

Klutch's sound is characterized by melodic choruses, quasi-rap punk-like verses, down-tuned guitars with complex layered power chord riffing, ambient keyboards/samples, and aggressive tribal-like drums with complex poly-rhythms and different time signatures. The band's music is influenced by an eclectic range of music genres: Jazz, Bebop, Classical Music, Hard Rock, Punk, Classic Rock, NWOBHM, NWOAHM, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, EDM, Industrial Metal, Nu Metal, and Metalcore.

Klutch are influenced by local Philippine rock pioneers Juan Dela Cruz Band, Sampaguita, The Dawn, Razorback, The Breed, The Youth, Yano, Siakol, The Teeth, Dahong Palay, and Wolfgang. The band's music is also greatly influenced by international acts such as Faith No More, Tool, The Prodigy, Sevendust, Skindred, Pantera, Disturbed, Body Count, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Public Enemy, Slayer, Static-X, Living Colour, and Megadeth. Also, the band draws inspiration from classics such as Cream, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Styx, Boston, King Crimson, Yes, and Rush.

According to the band, the Filipino lyrics in the songs are intentionally kept simple so as to resonate and be easily understood by everyone but yet still conceal and offer a deeper message hidden underneath each song's totality. The lyrics are also said to be carefully crafted to provoke thoughts on morality and socio-political commentary and parody. Choy, the band's main composer, claims that each song comes to him as titles or ideas, suggested by others, which dictates what kind of instrumentation would best invoke that thought, and this has been the band's songwriting process ever since—it also explains why each track sounds very different from another in the same album. This eclectic mix of sounds and genres is a signature trademark of the band.

History

The band was formed in March 2013 during a jam session at the Antipolo City home studio of former member Ompong Carait (drums), and the rough versions of the first and third singles, "Draybr" and "Lasing", were written in one night. Choy and Carait, in the early 2000s, had been in a previous band before, Reaktor, as a power trio with Michael Choy (Winnie's older brother) as the bassist/singer. In preparation for a few local shows, the band joked around a table of beers with the name, "Angulo" (Filipino term for "angle" or otherwise, "chaos"—because of the band's chaotic, raw sound). Many band names were tossed around the table, including "Grease Monkey" and "Taong Grasa" (suggested by Montealto), before Choy suggested the name "Klutch" (spelled with a "K" to make it sound more Filipino, and therefore Asian) was more fitting for their penchant for motorcycles, cars, running from the law, getting into road accidents, and living dangerously.

Songwriting and Music Production

Klutch has a triumvirate of main songwriters—Choy records and produces most of the band's music (and writes lyrics for English songs) while Victor Montealto, with the band's friend and main lyricist, Erwin Viacrusis, writes the Tagalog (Filipino) lyrics. Production of all the band's music is done by Choy in his home studio. Because of the dynamics of recent changes in the recording industry, Klutch has intentionally chosen to remain independent of major record labels and release songs under their own label, Souldagger Publishing. Songs are released as singles, and each song has accompanying artwork specific to the track done by Choy—an art aficionado and budding visual artist himself. Many of the deeper, socio-political themes in some of the songs are planted by Viacrusis suggesting ideas to the band.

Promotion and Media

On March 13, 2019, Klutch was a featured artist and the first single, "Draybr", was aired on the Philippine radio show, "The Punk Connection" on the station, Jam 88.3, with a live-stream on the show's Facebook page[1]. Songs can be streamed and downloaded free on the band's Bandcamp page. [2] The band also maintains a temporary website which features new releases, updates, and free streaming of tracks [3] as well as a YouTube channel dedicated to streaming the band's studio recordings and live performances. [4] The Facebook page of Klutch is also very active and contains the latest news and updates on the band members. [5]
