The Colossus of Groessen is a local myth from the village of Groessen in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The story originates from the early Carolingian period and tells of a boy who, due to a bizarre childhood incident, grew into a giant village hero.

Story

According to the original legend from the late 9th century, a young boy fell into a vat of beer as a child. Rather than suffering any harm, he grew into a colossal figure. Thanks to his great strength and size, he was able to perform tasks normally done by several oxen or people. For example, when ploughing the fields, one fewer ox was needed, making him a valuable asset to local agriculture.

In later versions of the story, especially from the 16th century onward, it was said that the Colossus was actually an orphan from Poland who ended up in a local farming household in Groessen. Because of this supposed origin, he was also referred to as De Pol (The Polish).

Village hero

The Colossus became a local legend and was regarded as a protector of the village. In addition to his agricultural contributions, he also managed to supply barrels of beer to the community—well before Groessen was easily accessible by cart or road. His deeds made him a beloved figure in regional tales and legends.

Origins

The story has roots in the Carolingian period but wasn't recorded in written form until the 16th century in regional accounts. There are no official historical sources confirming the Colossus’s existence, but the myth continues through oral tradition and local folklore.

Cultural impact

In Groessen, the Colossus is still mentioned during village festivals. Although never formally recognized as a historical figure, he remains part of the region’s collective memory.
