Konstantin Vučković (Serbian Cyrillic: Gornji Dabar near Sanski Most, 1823 - Split, 16 October 1893) was a merchant, philanthropist and founder Dubrovačka Matica srpska.

Biography[edit]

He lost his parents at an early age and went to Skradin, where he was taken care of by his uncle Sylvester, a monk and philanthropist. He stayed there for a year, before his uncle placed him in a shop in Zadar, where he worked for several years. He returned to Dabar for a short time, but due to great poverty, he went again to Split, there in 1845 he joined the service of the merchants Luka and Rista Tuzlić. When Risto Tuzlić died in 1863, he appointed Konstantin as his successor, but on the condition that he never marry and that he uses his property for charitable purposes. Vučković obeyed his mentor, and thanks to his skillful business he became one of the richest citizens of Split. [1]

Bequest[edit]

In his will, he bequeathed to the Orthodox Church Municipality in Dubrovnik 160,000 Austrian florints for the founding of Matica srpska.[2] He also left a significant sum for the establishment of a Serbian high school in Sarajevo. He bequeathed certain smaller sums to the Belgrade Trade Youth Association, Serbian Medical Association, as well as to many Serbian Orthodox churches in Dalmatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. [3] He bequeathed 11,000 forints to the Workers' Association in Split. [4]

Konstantin Vučković helped the insurgents during Nevesinje Uprising in Herzegovina (1875-1878). [5]

After his death it was written as follows:

"We lost one honest Serb. But we have acquired one benefactor of the people ... The names of the benefactor are our consolation in these darker days of our people, when so many terrible, strong and evil enemies of his attack him, who finally stifle his cultural development, who persecute the Serbian school, the Serbian book, the word Serbian ... Such endowments have sustained our people and so have their names in gratitude to the people. We would do wrong to the shadow of the late benefactor Vučković if we praised him here. We wouldn’t even know how to praise him enough. Acts speak."[6]
