Koosha Nassiri Nazif, also known as Koosha Nazif, is a researcher and businessman working in electrical engineering and photovoltaics. His research has focused on lightweight, flexible solar cells made from transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).[1] He is a co-founder and chief executive officer of Arinna, a company developing photovoltaic cells for spacecraft applications.[2]

Research

Nassiri Nazif conducted doctoral research at Stanford University, where he studied the use of two-dimensional semiconductors in photovoltaic cells.[2] In 2021, he was a lead author of a study on flexible solar cells made from tungsten diselenide (WSe2), published in Nature Communications.[3][4]

In a study published in 2023, Nassiri Nazif and his collaborators used modeling to examine the efficiency limits of solar cells based on several transition metal dichalcogenide materials. The model indicated that cells with a semiconductor layer approximately 50 nanometres thick could, under certain conditions, reach a power-conversion efficiency of up to 25 percent.[5]

In 2024, he contributed to the development of a method for producing tungsten diselenide films across wafer-scale surfaces. The researchers reported longer charge-carrier lifetimes than those previously observed in large-area TMD films and estimated a potential efficiency of approximately 22 percent for an optimized device.[6]

Business career

Nassiri Nazif co-founded Arinna with engineer Alexander Shearer. Their research focused respectively on TMD photovoltaic-cell architecture and methods for manufacturing the cells at a larger scale.[2]

In March 2026, TechCrunch reported that Arinna had raised a US$4 million seed-funding round to develop lightweight solar panels for space applications. The round was led by Spacecadet Ventures, with participation from Anorak Ventures and the Breakthrough Energy Foundation.[2]
