Korea GapYear is a South Korean social enterprise based in Seoul that operates in the field of education. Founded in 2012, it was the first organization to introduce the concept of a "gap year" to Korea. The company develops and manages international programs including internships, volunteer work, language courses, and cultural exchanges to support young people in Korea and abroad in gaining experience between their studies and careers.[1]
Overview
Korea GapYear operates over 800 programs—including internships, volunteer work, and educational travel—in more than 50 countries, supporting around 2,000 participants annually.Its main partners include local NGOs working in international development, social enterprises, and educational institutions. In recent years, the organisation has expanded its focus to include programs related to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Korean cultural exchange and educational content.[2]
History
- May 23, 2012: Korea GapYear is founded.
- December 31, 2019: Certified as a social enterprise by the Ministry of Employment and Labor of South Korea.[3]
Recognition
- Selected as an outstanding social economy enterprise at the 2nd Social Economy Awards by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency (2022)
- Awarded a Prime Minister’s Commendation for contributions to the promotion of the social economy and recognised as an exemplary social enterprise (2021)[4]
- Commendation from the President of the Korea Productivity Center at the National Productivity Awards for excellence in social economy productivity (2020)[5]
- Selected as an outstanding enterprise at the “Social Design Demoday” co-hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion (2020)
- Certified as a “leisure-friendly workplace” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (2019)
