Korea Kent Foreign School (KKFS) is a medium-sized school of 300 students in Seoul offering an American AP curriculum from K to 12. Graduates have consistently been accepted in prestigious universities in the US, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.[1] The student population is heavily drawn from children of foreign diplomats, resulting in one of the most diverse student bodies of any school in East Asia.[2]

KKFS has been located in the Gwangjin district of Seoul  since 2002.

History[edit]

KKFS was founded in 1993 for the purpose of providing English education to the international community in Seoul.[3] KKFS is accredited by Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE)[4] and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).[5]

KKFS is affiliated with the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS)[6]

Divisions[edit]

Kindergarten:[edit]

The kindergarten sets several objectives for the children in different areas such as reading, writing, science, physical environments, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, home skills, social and work habits.[7]

Elementary:[edit]

Subjects follow Common Core standards. Singapore Math teaching methods are followed. Social studies instruction covers Oceania, South America, and Africa in detail. The Music program is world music. All students take Art, and PE.

Middle School:[edit]

Subjects follow Common Core standards. Science follows “Next Generation Science” standards. World history is taught in all three grades, US history in Gr. 8. Students learn Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1, and take classes in Computer Science, Art, Music, Health, PE, and Geography. Mandarin and Spanish are taught in Gr. 8.

The High School curriculum is the standard American one following Common Core standards. 21 credits are required for graduation: 4 English, 4 Social Sciences, 3 Math, 3 Science, Computer Science, at least 1 foreign language, and 5 electives. 2 PE credits are available.[8]

Advanced Placement Program[edit]

KKFS offers a variety of College Board Approved Advanced Placement  classes including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Mandarin, Psychology, World History, US History, Studio Art, Music, Economics, Human Geography and Computer Science.

Students are also required to take the PSAT their Sophomore and Junior year.

House System[edit]

The House System at KKFS promotes school spirit and helps to guide students in a positive direction. All four Houses feature flying animals that align with the spirit of the merlin falcon, the school mascot. The House names, chosen by the students, are Thunderbird, Dove, Hornet and Phoenix. Every year, the houses compete for the Merlin Cup, awarded to the house with the most points at the end of the year.

Extracurricular Activities[edit]

Athletics[edit]

KKFS fields varsity teams in basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross-country and cheerleading, all of which compete at the Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference (KAIAC).[10] Middle School and Elementary School students participate with other international schools at a non-competitive level.

School Clubs[edit]

Korea Kent Foreign School has a variety of activities for students to get involved in. At the elementary level students can participate in the afterschool programs such as pee wee cheerleading, film club, creativity club and speaking club.

  • HS -Model United Nations - Re-established in 2017-2018
  • HS -Mu Alpha Theta Chapter - Official Chapter since 2015 - present. Members participate in the American Math Competition within all levels (8th, 10th and 12th level) and Mu Alpha Theta Stylized competitions with other International Schools in Korea.
  • HS - Debate Club - Participates in Forensics Tournaments with other international schools
  • Community outreach with Kent Volunteer Club and Red Cross Youth
  • Drama/Music/Arts - Variety Show, Spring Play, Art Showcase, Bands
