koreandogs.org is a non-profit organization primarily focused on campaigning against dog meat and cat consumption and associated animal cruelty in Korea. It is no a registered charity or formal organization, nor is it affiliated with any, in order to maintain its own integrity, path, and vision. The group welcomes donations and has many volunteers around the world. Its website is translated into 18 languages.

History[edit]

The group was founded in 2011 by Giny Woo, a Korean American who was born in South Korea. Growing up in South Korea, she became aware of the fate of many dogs in the country after seeing several men in a farm field across from her house burning a dog. Her family's dog had gone missing earlier. It is unclear if the dog in the field was hers but she always felt guilty thinking it might have been or else met the same fate.

After becoming aware of activist organizations in Korea campaigning against the dog meat trade, Giny found the courage to start campaigning herself to end the dog meat industry in South Korea. The more she learned on her journey, the more horrified she became at the industry and so it as her birth country's shame.

Through online social media, petition campaigns, and actions on the streets of San Francisco and Jacksonville, Florida, koreandogs.org volunteers seek to educate as many people as possible and ask them to join us in the fight against Korean dog and cat consumption.

Major Campaigns[edit]

South Korean Cities Campaign[edit]

This campaign is to urge the authorities in the most populous South Korean cities to enforce their laws and to put an immediate end to illegal dog and cat meat trades. Petitions and letters are sent to these cities using postal addresses of city mayors and the change.org petition site. A sample letter is provider for people to send their own protest letters.

Petitions To Shut Down Dog Farms[edit]

E-People complaints and petitions are filed with city authorities as well, with a focus on shutting down illegal dog farms across the country. E-people is a Korean government initiative where citizens can complain directly to government agencies. Every complaint is registered and answered.

Sister City Campaign (US)[edit]

Sister City Agreements are formed between cities to foster friendships and for mutually benefits (in trade, cultural exchanges, business links etc.). Many cities throughout the United States have a sister city in South Korea. It is koreandogs.org view that a city should not turn a blind eye to cruelties that are sanctioned in its sister city. Therefore is brings these cruelties to the attention authorities in US cities to urge them to reach out to their sister cities in South Korea and ask them to enforce their laws regarding the cruel dog and cat meat trades.

Sister City Campaign (Non-US)[edit]

Like the US cities campaign, the Non-US sister cities campaign targets cities around the world that have sister city agreements with cities in South Korea.
