Kory Reeder
Kory Reeder (born 1993 in Kearney, Nebraska) is an American composer, pianist, and teacher.
Biography
Reeder was born in Kearney, Nebraska, starting his musical career with punk rock in the DIY scene, instilling a contrarianism that eventually led him to avant-garde music, including George Crumb and Krzysztof Penderecki.[1] He is now a member of the Wandelweiser collective.[2] He studied with Antoine Beuger[3], Anthony Donofrio, Sungji Hong, Joseph Klein, Mikel Kuehn, Elainie Lillios, and Darleen Cowles Mitchell, and holds a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and a Master of Music in composition from Bowling Green State University and a PhD from the University of North Texas where he taught courses in composition, electronic music, rock music, music as politics, and vaporwave and directed the University Electronics Ensemble, and the Free Improv Ensemble.
Music
Described as “one of the most captivating composers in modern classical music,”[4] Reeder’s music is often introspective and atmospheric, investigating ideas of objectivity, place, immediacy, situation, and interaction with pieces ranging from symphonic works to text scores and computer-assisted improvisations. His work has been marked by patient development and hushed tones.[5] Reeder’s music is often elegantly consonant and languorous, suggesting a slowing of time and landscape scale that hints at Reeder’s Midwestern background and the endless, timeless plains of his native, American countryside.[6] Reeder runs/operates Sawyer Editions, a small-batch label specializing in contemporary, experimental, and improvised music, especially of new and unreleased artists and the Sawyer Spaces imprint focusing on field recordings and soundscape composition.[7]
