The Kossovo prefecture as part of nowadays Kosovo in 1941

The Prefecture of Kosovo or Kossovo prefecture (Prefektura e Kosovës), was an administrative unit of the state of Albania that existed from 1921 until 1945. It consisted of parts of the nowadays Kukës County.

Although through the division of Albania the area of today's Kosovo was outside the borders of the then Albanian state, the prefecture of Kosovo was created from the areas adjacent to Kosovo within the Principality of Albania. When the country was reunified with Kosovo within the Kingdom of Albania (Greater Albania), a new Kosovo prefecture was created under Italian rule within the borders of today's Kosovo (next to the Metohija prefecture).

Name[edit]

Regarding the political circumstances, the reason for naming this prefecture with the name Kosovo is believed to be because of patriotic motives. The naming should underline the unjust division of Kosovo and other predominantly Albanian populated areas from the planned Ottoman Vilâyet Albania and the natural unity of those on both sides of the newly created border. From a geographical and historical, as well as from an economic and cultural point of view, the area of the prefecture of Kukes was nothing more than a continuation of the part of Kosovo that remained within the state of Albania.[1]

Population[edit]

The prefecture of Kosovo had a total of 41,323 inhabitants in 1923 and was predominantly Muslim. Some were staunch Sunnis and some were followers of various Sufi orders such as the Bektashi order. Hajji Reshat Bardhi, the Dedebaba (head) of the Bektashite order in Albania and worldwide, was born here at the time of the Kosovo prefecture.[2]

Avni Rustemi's ideology was enforced in the National Assembly of 1924; he became a deputy of the people from the nowadays ex-prefecture of Kosovo.
