Kothari Brothers (Ram Kothari and Sharad Kothari) were RSS workers who were killed during kar seva (volunteer work) in 1990. They were allegedly killed in police firing on 02 Nov 1990 and the family came to know about it on 3rd nov 1990.[1][2]. In 2016, Mulayam Singh Yadav on whose order firing was done, regretted the incident. [3]

Early life[edit]

Ram Kothari and Sharad Kothari were born to Hiralal ji Kothari and Sumitra Devi Kothari on 27 July 1968 & 14 October 1970 respectively. They studied at Umesh Chandra College.[4]

Background[edit]

On 22 October 1990, Ram & Sharad Kothari led the troop of sixty nine members from Kolkata, who were departing for Ayodhya. They were to there to perform kar seva to facilitate construction of Ram Janmabhoomi temple at Babri Masjid site. After departing from Kolkata, their group had to stop at Benaras. As the railway was barred from going further, they took a taxi to Kolapur. From their, they walked nearly 200 kms to reach Ayodhya. They reached their destination on 30 October, at 4 a.m. The troop led by the two brothers was the first to enter the premises of RAM JANAM BHOOMI TEMPLE, and hosted the flag to marked the event. On same day, there was firing on kar sevaks. The duo escaped safely and reached Faizabad. They returned back to Ayodhya from Faizabad on 2 November. In this incident the two leaders got shot dead.[5] [6]

Legacy[edit]

On October 30, 1998, the Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Lalji Tandon unveiled a black granite-and-marble memorial to the brothers at Rajajipuram, Lucknow[7] A memorial trust Kothari Bandhu Sewa Trust was formed in their memory in Kolkata, currently presided by their sister Purnima Kothari.[8][9] In 2015, she planned an event to commemorate their 25th death anniversary at Ayodhya but the event was cancelled as permission was denied by state government.
