Kristof Bilsen

Kristof Bilsen (Antwerp, 1979) is a Belgian documentary director and -producer. In 2011 he graduated at the National Film and Television School (UK).

He won several awards, such as Grand Prize Nanook-Jean Rouch in Paris[1], Magic Hour Award at Docs Against Gravity (Warsaw)[2], the TRT 2nd International Documentary Award in Istanbul[3], nominee Bertha Best International Documentary at One World Media Awards (UK)[4], the Buzz Wilson Award on Michael Moore 's Traverse City Film Festival[5]. His work screened at various festivals internationally, a.o. at Camden Film Festival (US).[6]

Career[edit]

Kristof started as shooting director, editor and theatre co-director.

His first documentary Three Women (Drie Vrouwen)], about the hopes, dreams and anxieties of three detained women in Ghent prison, was nominated for the Henri Storck Prize 2005 – and screened several times on Belgian National Television.

In 2014 he released Elephant's Dream,[7] a film he directed/filmed and co-produced. About the film, Indiewire Zeba Blay said "In the pantheon of documentaries about the Congo, Elephant’s Dream is an incredibly necessary addition."(INDIEWIRE)[8] The Hollywood Reporter described it as "three ordinary stories combined in a extraordinary documentary."[9]

He started as shooting director, after he graduated in 2002 doing a BA Film at Luca Arts in Brussels. After working several years in performing arts, he pursued an MA Documentary Direction at the National Film and Television School (UK). He participated at Berlinale Talent Campus and did a weeklong workshop tutored by Werner Herzog.
