John Michael Montero Edixon, known professionally as Kritiko, is a Filipino rapper and songwriter.[1] He entered mainstream music through the Himig Handog songwriting competition in 2018, where his composition "Kababata", which he performed with Kyla, was named Third Best Song.[2] The recording was later nominated for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Recording at the 32nd Awit Awards.[3]
Kritiko released his debut extended play, Tama Ko'y Mali, through Star Music in 2021.[4] He later signed with Blvck Music and released the digital album Bounce in 2024.[5]
Career
2018–2019: Himig Handog and early career
Kritiko came from Manila's underground music scene before moving into mainstream music through Himig Handog.[1] In 2018, he joined the competition with "Kababata", a song he composed and performed with Kyla. The entry placed third in the competition.[2]
"Kababata" subsequently received a nomination for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Recording at the 32nd Awit Awards.[3] Kritiko and Kyla were also nominated for Collaboration of the Year at the 11th PMPC Star Awards for Music, while Kritiko received a separate nomination for Rap Artist of the Year for the recording.[6]
In 2019, Kritiko wrote and performed the rap verse for KZ Tandingan's "Raise Your Flag", a song inspired by Catriona Gray's journey in Miss Universe 2018.[7] He also wrote and performed "Salamat Sa..." with Loisa Andalio, collaborated with Ogie Alcasid and Iñigo Pascual on a remix of "Do You Wanna Dance with Me", and contributed a rap verse to the Christmas single "Kay Sayang Pasko Na Naman" with Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis.[8] "Kay Sayang Pasko Na Naman" was used in the film The Mall, the Merrier!.[5]
"Raise Your Flag" was later nominated for Best Inspirational Recording at the 33rd Awit Awards.[9]
2020–2021: Tama Ko'y Mali and Himig return
In 2020, Kritiko released "Amazak", the first part of a trilogy of original rap songs centred on a forbidden relationship. Its title is derived from the Filipino word kasama written backwards.[8]
He followed it with "PM", the second part of the trilogy, later that year. Pilipino Star Ngayon reported that the track continued the narrative begun by "Amazak" and dealt with longing and a relationship considered socially unacceptable. "Amazak" had also been featured on Spotify Philippines' New Music Friday and Pinoy Rap playlists.[10]
Kritiko returned to the Himig competition as a featured interpreter alongside Davey Langit on Kenneth Reodica's "Ang Hirap Maging Mahirap", a song based on the experiences of people facing poverty.[11] The entry was named Fourth Best Song at the Himig 11th Edition finals in March 2021. During the finals, JM Yosures performed the song with Kritiko.[12]
In June 2021, Kritiko released his debut EP, Tama Ko'y Mali, through Star Music. The self-written EP centres on a relationship that is portrayed as being right at the wrong time. Its track "2AM" concludes the narrative begun by "Amazak" and "PM"; the EP also contains "Bakit Ikaw" and "Kahit Di Tayo".[4]
Later that year, Kritiko featured on "B HU U R" by BINI, from the group's debut album Born to Win. Manila Bulletin identified Kritiko as the featured rapper on the disco-influenced track.[13] He later appeared as a special guest during BINI and BGYO's two-night One Dream: The BINI & BGYO Concert in November.[1]
That year, Kritiko received another Rap Artist of the Year nomination at the 12th PMPC Star Awards for Music for "Salamat Sa".[14] He was also nominated at the MOR Awards for New Male Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for "Salamat Sa".[5]
Later in 2021, MYX Global featured Kritiko as part of its 1MX Spotlight series ahead of his participation in 1MX Manila.[1]
2022: "Create New Paths"
In 2022, Kritiko collaborated with singer Denise Julia and producer Moophs on "Create New Paths", an original song created for the Philippine launch of Adidas Originals' NMD_V3. Kritiko and Denise Julia co-wrote the song's lyrics.[15] An accompanying music video was premiered at an Adidas Philippines launch event in Makati.[16]
2024: Bounce
Kritiko later signed with Blvck Music and became managed by Blvck Entertainment Production. In 2024, he released the six-track digital album Bounce.[5] The record includes the title track, "315 (Ti_l I Found)", "Isigaw Mo Lang", "Palaisipan", "Di Nawala" featuring Yhanzy, and "Balang Araw" featuring Yhanzy.[5]
Kritiko wrote all of the songs on Bounce. He described the project as combining positive and negative experiences and focusing on overcoming difficulties while pursuing personal goals.[5]
