The Camouflage

Due to their experience is combat after a handful of tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Kryptek Co-Founders agreed that the most effective method of concealment on the battlefield was camo netting. Originating from combat use in World War II, camouflage netting became the base inspiration for Kryptek's wide range of camouflage technology [1].

Unlike today's traditional camouflage, Kryptek incorporates micro and macro layering inspired by artillery camouflage netting, first used in World War II. This creation method generates a 3D appearance on a 2D surface — and near-invisibility making for the perfectly concealed camo.[2] These specific patterns have been tested from hunters, military professionals and manymore individuals exposed to backcountry setting. [2] Kryptek camo has even displayed its effectiveness through the United States Department of Defense. The U.S. Department of defense concluded that Kryptek camo is one of the most effective in defending retinal tracking.[2]

Kryptek had faced many instances of others Copyright, Patent, and Trademark Infringement against their designs and camo pattern. [2] The first big instance of this was against Salt Armour, Inc., Alpha Defense, Inc. and Thomas J. De Sernia in 2015. [3] In order to combat this infringement Kryptek filed multiple cease and desist's against the brand to try to put a stop to their creation and distribution of counterfeit Kryptek products. [2] The defendants continued to ignore Kryptek's efforts and continued to claim that these patterns were their exclusive creations and even went as far as to rename them in attempt to conceal their original origin. Kryptek had no choice but to file a lawsuit against the individuals behind the operation.[3] "The Court’s Final Judgment and Permanent Injunction of March 29, 2016 found that Defendants had infringed on Kryptek’s copyrighted and patented camouflage patterns and willfully infringed on Kryptek’s trademarks, and ordered Defendants to pay One Million, Seventy-Five Thousand Dollars ($1,075,000.00) as damages for the infringement, plus attorneys’ fees and costs of court. The Court also permanently enjoined Defendants from further infringing activities."[3] After a long battle CEO and Co-Founder Butch Whiting expressed great gratitude to the court and stated that he hoped this victory would ward off others and express their passion towards defending their creations both domestically and abroad.[3]

History

Butch Whiting and Josh Cleghorn met by happenstance, Josh Cleghorn was an enlisted NCO in the Navy and did a large range of high speed stuff in units that "don’t exist".[4] But after some time Josh decided that he wanted to be involved with helicopter operations for the United States Army. So, Josh left the Navy and joined the U.S. Army's warrant officer candidate school. Throughout his time there Josh was at the top of his class nearly the entire time. At this time Butch was at Aide-de-camp for the commanding general of the Army Aviation Warfighting Center, which allowed him to see the performance of those currently going through warrant officer candidate school. [4]Butch immediately recognized the incredible performance of Josh and hand-picked him to join the unit that was being stood up in which he had the privilege of being able to command. Josh made the perfect addition to Butch's unit and has since been described as one of the most 'audacious trigger-pullers' that he has ever met.[4]

Butch and Josh went on to serve in Baghdad and Taji, north of Baghdad. But then moved near the Syrian Border to Tal Afar. Here Al Qaeda were heavily pushing their forces, people and efforts into a small town of Tal Afar, specifically the Saria district. This is where Butch and Josh served out a handful of long, hard and dangerous months together. Officially forming their bond via combat. Josh and Butch stuck together ever since, Butch Whiting claims that Josh was on nearly 95% of all missions that Butch was on while enlisted in the United States Army. [4]

While serving together in the Ninewa Providence in Northern Iraq, Kryptek founders Josh Cleghorn and Butch Whiting discovered they shared a common thread: an unprecedented passion and desire for extreme big game hunting, especially in austere environments.[5] They shared a common mentality and philosophical attitude about the pursuit of big game. Their success on the battlefield was directly related to this mentality - the same principles applied. Skill sets necessary in combat are often applicable to the hunter. It is here that Whiting and Cleghorn began their journey toward what would result in Kryptek Outdoor Group.[6]

The concept behind Kryptek was to design a high-tech line of clothing and hinting gear that had features that would normally not be available to civilians. [7] With their experience the two were tired of the short coming of all the other available gear so they went out to make their own. While still serving full-time in the U.S. Army the two bonded in brotherhood set out to build their business plan.[7] Their original business plan was nothing more than a 15-20 document outlining what would become the model in which Kryptek was built upon.[4] Shortly after the two separated, Cleghorn, went on to fly in the 160th, which was aviation special warfare.[4] Butch went on to the Combined Arm Document Directorate and then ultimately made the decision to go to Alaska and separate after 10 years and 9 months of service.[4]

Kryptek's name is combination of two Greek words: Kryptos and Technos. In the Greek language Kryptos means "hidden," and Technos, means "technologies." [2] Simply put, Kryptek's purpose is reiterated in its name: hidden technologies. [6]

Kryptek received one of its' first big breaks when it got recognized by Cabelas. [1]Cabelas took notice to the unique products and the blending of combat experience and civilian hunting. They’d tried to capture the tactical/hunting crossover demographic but lacked any authenticity or credibility, both of which Kryptek has[1]. Kryptek was then able to secure an exclusive deal with Cabelas allowing them to start selling Kryptek gear and using Kryptek's distinct camo pattern.[1]

Around this time is when the United States Department of Defense released their U.S. Army Camo Improvement Effort. [1]This sprung Kryptek into action and sped up the development of the iconic Kryptek Pattern. Luckily with the Co-founders tactical experience they already had experience and knowledge of what worked best in the battlefield. Aside from ghille suits they remembered that camoflauge netting was an unforgettable tool in the battlefield and a master of disguise.[1] This is what would soon be the main inspiration behind Kryptek's never before seen camo pattern.

After their pattern submission to the Department of Defense Kryptek's pattern was one of the 24 other companies that were selected to move onto Phase 1 testing. [1] This testing consisted of using picture-in-picture testing with retinal tracking. Current soldiers had retinal tracking used to see how quickly they could spot the camo and identify the person wearing said camo in an array of different environments. [1]This process then eliminated 20 of the other companies in this testing allowing Kryptek and three others to move onto the second phase. This was a major achievement for the small up and coming company as they were competing with three other major industry players to see who had the best camo.[1] Unfortunately they would never know. Three years into testing, a bill passed in congress declared that all military personel would be required to wear the same camo patterns putting the U.S. Army Camo Improvement effort in a tail spin. Because of this the results of Phase II were never released and no winner was declared. [1]

Butch eventually split off and lived in Alaska for nearly ten more years and said that “For a long time our headquarters was wherever my laptop was.” But after the company started to take off Kryptek established their headquarters in Boise Idaho.

Founders

Kryptek was started by combat veterans Butch Whiting and Josh Cleghorn. Conceptualized in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, a new approach to camouflage and outdoor apparel was born.

CW3. Josh Cleghorn began his military career as a Navy Deep Sea Diver stationed at SDV Team 2. After six years involved with Navy Special Warfare and Special Operations, Josh Joined the army where he and Butch Whiting were Apache Helicopter Pilots together. After his Iraq deployment, he was assessed and selected to the U.S. Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR). These aviators are highly trained and skilled pilots operating exclusively in classified missions. Josh piloted the well known MH/AH-6M Little Bird. Josh’s time spent in both Naval and Army special warfare units garnered him the opportunity to make lasting friendships with some our nations top tier-1 operators. Many of them have since become members of Kryptek’s ProStaff.

MAJ. Butch Whiting is co-founder and CEO of Kryptek Outdoor Group. Butch has an impressive military history that includes numerous awards and deployments. Butch piloted the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter ands served combat duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan. During his military career, Maj. Butch Whiting has received two Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Air Medal, five Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Support Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, the Air Assault Badge, Airborne Badge, Senior Aviation Badge, and the Combat Action Badge. Butch is also a passionate hunter and has pursued big game on multiple continents.

The founders of Kryptek share a brotherhood that could only be forged in combat[8]. In the deserts of third-world countries, through the crucible of physical conflict with the enemy, the founders found themselves fighting our nation’s battles, and a part of a culture where results meant the difference between success or failure, victory or defeat, and most importantly, life or death.[9]

The founders of Kryptek do not necessarily consider their experiences unique. They consider their array of experiences in the shoes of a professional warrior to be shared by many who have chosen to pursue the same lifestyle path. This shared brotherhood is vast and ever growing.[5] But, despite these shared paths the integration of combat experience and passion for the outdoors is not as common, especially when it come to bringing in products to represent this partnership. Knowing that when the opportunity does present itself, regardless of the elements, it must be seized, and there can be no compromises with one’s “kit”, or gear... such is Kryptek.[9]
