Kse sangvar
Ksae sangvar (Khmer: ខ្សែរសង្វារ) or Sangvar is a traditional Khmer strap or chain (made of gold or from other elements) worn diagonally or crisscross over the body in Cambodia.[1]. Sangvar kvaeng or sanvar poath are specific terms for sangvar with the x-shape.
History[edit]
Sangvar has been worn in Cambodia since ancient times. Deities and figures since Funan and Chenla were decorated with this kind of x-shape strap. In Khmer Empire, Sangvar was depicted on both male and female deities, royalty and other figures were seen with sangvar on their body.[2]
Sangvar can be worn by both men and women, however in the Cambodian traditional dance, this x-shape strap is commonly worn by male character. In the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, sangvar is part of the male roles’ costume such as the prince, monkey, garuda, or yaksha. Sangvar is also worn by Apsara dancers since Angkorian period as well as in today Apsara dance of Cambodia[3]
Design[edit]
Sangvar can be made from different materials. It is believed that sangvar was made of gold chain for the kings. For the princess or the Apsaras, sangvar is made of string of precious stones or beads.
In the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, sangvar can be made from convenient materials such as straps of clothes, chain of metal[4] or beads.
Cultural Symbol[edit]
Sangvar is believed[by whom?] to be the symbol of bravery of Khmer people as the kings, generals, and army of Khmer empire were seen wearing sangvar while going to war.
