Kubermatic (formerly Loodse) is a German software company headquartered in Hamburg that develops tools for deploying and operating Kubernetes clusters across cloud, on-premises and edge computing environments.[1][2] The company was founded in 2016 as Loodse and was renamed Kubermatic in 2020 when it released the source code of its main platform, the Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform (KKP), under the Apache 2.0 licence.[3][4] Kubermatic has been recognised as a corporate contributor to the Kubernetes project and to the wider Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) ecosystem, and has been named in industry analyst reports including the Gartner Magic Quadrant and the QKS Group SPARK Matrix.[5][6]
History
Kubermatic was founded in 2016 in Hamburg by Sebastian Scheele and Julian Hansert under the name Loodse GmbH.[7][8] In May 2018 the company became one of the first Kubernetes Certified Service Providers and Kubernetes Training Partners recognised by the CNCF.[8] In May 2019 it released its cluster lifecycle tool KubeOne as open source, and by that year the company was reported to be among the largest corporate contributors of code to the Kubernetes project, behind Google, VMware, Red Hat and Microsoft.[8][3]
In June 2020, the company open-sourced its core platform, then called the Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform, under the Apache 2.0 licence and renamed itself from Loodse to Kubermatic.[3][4] Subsequent products released by the company include KubeLB, a Kubernetes-native load balancing tool; Kubermatic Virtualization (KubeV), built on KubeVirt; and the Kubermatic Developer Platform (KDP), an internal developer platform based on the kcp project.[2][9]
In December 2025, Kubermatic joined the Linux Foundation's newly formed Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) as a founding silver member, alongside companies such as SUSE, Mirantis and Uber.[10][11]
Products and services
Kubermatic's main product is the Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform (KKP), a platform for creating, managing and automating Kubernetes clusters across public cloud, private cloud, bare metal and edge infrastructure from a single control plane.[2][9] The company's other products include KubeOne, a lifecycle-management tool for individual Kubernetes clusters; KubeLB, a load-balancing tool for multi-cluster and multi-tenant environments; Kubermatic Virtualization (KubeV), which runs virtual machines alongside containers on Kubernetes; Kubermatic SecureGuard (KubeSG), a secrets-management tool; and the Kubermatic Developer Platform (KDP), a self-service developer platform.[9][2] The company also provides consulting, training and support services and holds status as a CNCF Certified Kubernetes Service Provider and Training Partner.[8][12] Customers cited by the company include Lufthansa, Bosch and Siemens.[7]
Open-source involvement
Kubermatic has described itself as following an open-core model, releasing its core software as open source while selling enterprise support and add-on services.[3] KubeOne was released as open source in 2019 and KKP followed in 2020, both under the Apache 2.0 licence.[8][4] The company has been described by trade press as one of the largest corporate contributors of code to the upstream Kubernetes project, and it has continued to participate in CNCF working groups, including Kubernetes SIG ContribEx and the CNCF TAG for Operational Resilience.[3][13] Kubermatic engineers have also contributed to kcp, an open-source multi-tenant Kubernetes API server project that underlies KDP.[13] In 2026, Kubermatic architect Mario Fahlandt was appointed to the CNCF Technical Oversight Committee, which oversees the technical direction of CNCF-hosted projects.[14]
Industry recognition
Kubermatic was named a Niche Player in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management, published in August 2025, and was also recognised in Gartner's accompanying Critical Capabilities for Container Management report; the company states it was the only Germany-headquartered vendor named in the Magic Quadrant that year.[5][15] It was also named in the Forrester Wave for Multicloud Container Platforms in the third quarter of 2025, and had previously been named a Gartner Cool Vendor in Container Management in 2023.[2]
In July 2026, QKS Group named Kubermatic a Leader in its SPARK Matrix for Edge Kubernetes Platforms, Q3 2026, citing the company's Kubernetes-in-Kubernetes architecture and its early work on AI-related tooling such as K8sGPT and support for the Model Context Protocol.[6] As described above, the company also became a founding silver member of the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025.[10][11] Kubermatic is also certified to ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 9001.[2]
