Kumud Pawade

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Kumud Pawade was born to a Mahar family in Nagpur in 1938. She witnessed the Deekshabhumi conversion in 1956.[1] Pawade is a professor of Sanskrit. She has written and published articles on Vedic Smritis, classical literature, and the women's movement, along with Phule-Ambedkarite ideology. Pawde is the president of the All India Progressive Women's Organisation, which was established in Nagpur in 1974. Pawade has also authored a book, Antahspot ('The Inner Burst').[2]

Early life and background

Pawade's grandfather was a social activist for the Scheduled Castes Federation (SCF), a political party in India founded by Dr. Ambedkar. Following him, Pawade's mother also joined in social activism. She completed normal school training. She worked as a caretaker and teacher for Dalit children. Pawade's father was a Phulewadi. [1]

Pawade developed an interest and great eagerness to learn about Sanskrit through her school teacher, Gokhale Guruji.[3]

Hailing from the Mahar community, she is the first woman to complete her master's degree in Sanskrit literature. However, it was difficult for her to find jobs in colleges in Maharashtra because she was not a Brahmin.[1]

Antasphot (The Inner Burst)

According to Pawade, Antasphot is not an 'autobiography' but a critical sketch of her experiences. Her book attempts to analyze the experiences of individuals and communities. Pawade argues that analysis of women's lives cannot exclude exploitation based on gender. She believes that Dalit women are victims of double exploitation.[4]

Recognition

Kumud Pawade was awarded the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 by an organization called the Dr. Ambedkarite Movement of Culture and Literature.[5]
