Kurt Pudniks (born 1982) is an Australian software engineer who ran as the Greens candidate for Leichhardt in the 2016 Federal election.[1] He organised the first GovHack FNQ event in Cairns in 2014 to advocate for increased innovation in Government.[2][3] Accordingly his 2016 campaign was noted for its independence of thought from traditional Party bounds.[4] However this ultimately proved to be problematic when he was disendorsed by the Queensland Greens in August 2016.[5]

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

Pudniks grew up in Brinsmead, Cairns, Queensland. He happened to win a Youth for Leukaemia photo competition in 1994.[6][excessive detail?] He was Saint Augustine's College dux in 1999 and left Cairns to attend the Australian National University on a National Undergraduate Scholarship in 2000.[7]

Career[edit]

Starting at Navy Systems Command in 2006, Pudniks held several roles at the Directorate of Navy Platform Systems.[8] He worked as a Network Planning Engineer at Aurora Energy in Hobart, Tasmania from 2011-2013.[9] He returned home for subcontracting work at the HMAS Cairns naval base from April 2013 until March 2016, during which time he assisted the Engineers Australia Cairns regional group.[10] As of July 2016 he is self-employed and is the company director of Digital Physics Pty Ltd.[11]

Philosophical and/or political views[edit]

2016 campaign[edit]

In the 2016 campaign as the Greens candidate for Leichhardt, the featured issues included food quality, infrastructure investment, new jobs in the new economy, small business growth, the green economy, and youth development.[1][12] He was invited to the campaign launch of the ALP candidate although it was subsequently reported that he gatecrashed the offical Labor event.[13][14] He was invited to the Cairns Chamber of Commerce luncheon where he noted the relatively small extent of the funding commitment offered by the incumbent Government candidate Warren Entsch.[15] Other statements made were largely in line with Greens policy positions and tailored to the FNQ region, such as prioritising the protection of the Great Barrier Reef, rather than ongoing Government subsidies towards the industrial expansion of coal mining.[16][17] It was noted that as a first time, or "green" (i.e. inexperienced) candidate, he needed an education in the Australian compulsory preferential voting system.[18] Based on the early swing margin results at the conclusion of the campaign, he suggested that if those swings were repeated across several more election cycles (given that Australian federal elections must occur every 3 years or sooner) that within 10 years, the seat could be won by a future Greens candidate.[19]

Pudniks campaigned on land clearing legislation, raised quotas for refugees to Australia, the source of new jobs for the new 21st century economy, and the Daintree Rainforest.[20][9]

He has family connections to the nearby rural Sugarcane-farming districts in Cairns.[9]

2016 disendorsement[edit]

Due to his independent campaigning style, he gained the public endorsement of the formerly-ALP now independent Member for Cairns Rob Pyne.[4] Unfortunately this independence from traditional Party social media protocols ultimately led to his disendorsement by the Queensland Greens in August 2016.[5]
