Kurtis Mickel Carsch (born 1994) is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Chemistry since January 2025[1]. He is known for the discovery of the fields of high-temperature gas adsorption[2] and organometallic-mediated chemical separations[3]. He is further known for his research on ligand field inversion[4], copper-nitrene catalysis[5], and reversible oxygen binding[6][7]. His current research program is positioned at the interface of synthetic chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering, where he utilizes inorganic design principles for C–H functionalization catalysis and chemical separations. Major awards include the Hertz Thesis Prize, the Hertz Graduate Fellowship, and the International Adsorption Society Award for Excellence in Publication by a Young Member of the Society.
Carsch attended the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas, where he conducted computational chemistry research with Prof. Thomas Cundari. His research findings have been featured in numerous public outlets[8], where he was also an Intel Science Talent Search Finalist[9]. He received a joint B.S./M.S. at Caltech in 2016 under the joint supervision of Profs. William A. Goddard and Theodor Agapie. He completed his Ph.D. in 2021 with Prof. Theodore Betley at Harvard in synthetic inorganic chemistry, followed by a postdoctoral appointment with Prof. Jeffrey Long and the University of California, Berkeley with a specialty in metal–organic frameworks. His Ph.D. focused on ligand field inversion in late transition metal complexes.
Carsch has received numerous accolades for his teaching, his passion for mentorship, and his academic findings.[10]
