Kyle Howard Rittenhouse (born January 3, 2003) is an American man who gained notoriety after shooting three people, two of which died, in an act of self-defense in Kenosha, Wisconsin during a period of civil unrest following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse was charged with serious felonies relating to the shooting and was tried in Kenosha County Circuit Court, but was declared not guilty on all counts by an unanimous jury.

Following his acquittal, Rittenhouse has been invited to several private and public events hosted by various conservative organizations and individuals, including meetings with former president Donald Trump, representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, and political commentator Tucker Carlson.[1]

Background[edit]

Kyle Rittenhouse was born in Lake County, Illinois and is partially of Hispanic descent.[2] He is the son of Mike Rittenhouse and Wendy Rittenhouse, a registered nurse.[3] His parents married in February 2000 and had three children: Faith (born 2000), Kyle (born 2003) and McKenzie (born 2003).[3] When Kyle Rittenhouse was four, his father was charged with domestic battery after allegedly punching his mother; All charges were dropped after his denial of the situation.[3] Before the 2020 shooting, he lived with his mother and siblings in in Antioch, Illinois.[4] Rittenhouse identified with the Blue Lives Matter movement and was a supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, but he later attended a rally for Donald Trump because of his support for police. He is now trying to avoid politics, describing himself as "not a political person."[5][4]

Court records indicate that Rittenhouse worked as a lifeguard at a YMCA in suburban Lindenhurst. A YMCA spokeswoman told the Chicago Tribune that Rittenhouse was a part-time employee who has been furloughed since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

Shooting and trial[edit]

After the police shooting of Jacob Blake, an African-American man, many protests occurred at Kenosha, Wisconsin, the place where he was shot, for several months of 2020. On August 26, during one of these protests, then 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse attended in order to provide medical aid for injured policemen.[4] While there, he shot at three men, two of whom died.

Trial[edit]

During the trial, he moved out of his apartment where he was arrested without informing the jury, which was heavily controversial.[7] He was declared not guilty on all charges and freed in November 2021.

Activism[edit]

After the trial, Rittenhouse was invited to many panels and meetings hosted by various conservative politicians from the US, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump Jr., and Tucker Carlson,[1] notably meeting with former president Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. He also publicly declared himself a supporter of the social movement Black Lives Matter.[1]
