Kyle Stewart (born January 31, 1989) is an American mixed martial artist who competes in the Middleweight division of the Bellator MMA.
Background[edit]
Stewart grew up in the Valley, going to Mesa Dobson High School. Practicing point-fighting karate until the age of 18, after watching Lyota Machida win the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, Stewart decided to pursue MMA. He would join Arizona Combat Sports in Tempe, where he learned kickboxing, BJJ, wrestling, and muay thai.[2][3]
Stewart joined the military and became a machine-gunner for the United States Marine Corps, spending 8 years in the service and doing 3 tours in Afghanistan, before stepping away to pursue his MMA career. Stewart fought amateur bouts and much of his early MMA career while still in the Marine CorpsHis nickname is an ode to his years in the service, as "Gunz up" is a term used to describe a person operating a weapon system when they are ready for battle.[4][3][2]
Mixed martial arts career[edit]
Early career[edit]
Making his MMA debut in 2015, Stewart submitted Raymond Pina via armbar in the first round at WFF 22 to win the WFF Welterweight Championship. He would go on to defend the title three times in the next 4 bouts; Billy Colon via TKO in round one, Matt Bordonaro via unanimous decision and a first round knockout at WFF 33 against Misael Inarritu. He then defeated UFC veteran Estevan Payan via unanimous decision at Iron Boy MMA 5.[5] At LFA 11, he submitted Ty Freeman with a shoulder lock in round one of his LFA debut.[6]
Stewart was invited to Dana White's Contender Series 3 on July 25, 2017 against Jason Jackson. He won the bout in the second round, after Jackson twisted his ankle in a gruesome manner and was unable to continue. He did not receive a UFC contract after the win.[7]
Stewart returned to LFA in the main event of LFA 33 against fellow unbeaten Jaleel Willis. He won the bout via majority decision.[8]
After winning via first round submission over Chauncey Foxworth at Iron Boy MMA 11, Stewart faced James Nakashima at LFA 46 for the LFA Welterweight Championship.[9] He lost the bout via unanimous decision.[10]
Rebounding from the loss, Stewart faced Braden Smith at LFA 53, winning the bout via unanimous decision.[11]
Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]
Stewart, replacing Dwight Grant, faced Chance Rencountre on a weeks notice on January 19, 2019 at UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw.[12] Stewart lost the fight via a rear-naked choke submission in the first round.[13]
Stewart faced Erik Koch on July 27, 2019 at UFC 240.[14] He lost the fight via unanimous decision.[15]
On November 5, 2019, it was announced that Stewart was no longer on the UFC roster.[16]
Post UFC[edit]
Making his first appearance after his UFC release and moving up to Middleweight, Stewart faced Mike Jones at Fierce FC: New Era, winning the bout via knockout less then a minute into the bout. He was then offered a co-main bout against Tim Caron at LFA 91.[17] He won the bout via TKO stoppage in the second round.[18]
Stewart faced Chris Curtis on January 30, 2021 at XMMA 1.[19] He lost the bout via TKO in the third round.[20]
Rebounding off the loss, Stewart faced John Poppie in the main event of Cage Warriors 126,[21] where he won the bout after knocking out Poppie with an uppercut in the first round.[22]
Stewart faced Nah-Shon Burrell at CFFC 102 on October 30, 2021. He lost the fight via unanimous decision.[23]
Stewart faced Zak Ottow on April 2, 2022 at XMMA 4.[24] He won the bout via unanimous decision.[25]
Bellator MMA[edit]
Stewart, replacing Anthony Adams, faced Lorenz Larkin on May 6, 2022 at Bellator 280.[26] Stewart lost the bout within the first round after multiple knees to the body and punches on Stewart while he was on the ground.[27]
