The interview of Luis XIV and Felipe IV in the Island of the Pheasants (French: Entrevue de Louis XIV et de Philippe IV dans l'île des Faisans French, Entrevue of Louis XIV et of Philippe IV dans l'île give Faisans) is an oil painting on canvas made by artist Jacques Laumosnier in 1660.[1]

History[edit]

The Franco-Spanish War (1635–59) was a conflict involving the realms of the Habsburg dynasty supported by their allies and the realms challenging their power, primarily Spain vs. France. The war between both realms lasted for ten years, resulting in the Spanish defeat at the Battle of the Dunes (1658). It was followed up by the Treaty of the Pyrenees signed on 7 July 1659 at the Pheasant Island, lying on the river Bidasoa that outlined the boundary between both kingdoms.

Description[edit]

Tapestry of Charles Lee Brun representing the same scene situated in the Embassy of France in Madrid.[2]

The painting portrays the meeting between King Luis XIV of France and Philip IV of Spain in the Island of the Pheasants on 7 June 1659, in which the Spanish monarch delivered his daughter María Teresa to the French monarch as a wife.[3] The dynastic arrangement was coupled with the signature of the Treaty of the Pyrenees, bringing the war to an end.

On the French side, the widowed queen Ana of Austria, sister of the king of Spain and mother of the French monarch. There is also the duke Philippe I of Orleans and the cardinal Jules Mazarin, plenipotentiary of the king.[3][2]

On the Spanish side, the king Philippe IV appears accompanied by his daughter María Teresa, his son and heir Carlos, the Count-Duque of Olivares Luis of Haro, plenipotentiary of the king, as well as one of the organisers of the meeting Diego Velázquez, who at that moment was sixty years of age.[2][3]
