László Z. Karvalics (born December 23, 1961) is an associate professor with a PhD in History. He researches information society in theory and practice, as well as information policy, strategy issues, information science, and the Internet economy. At the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, he founded and directed the Information Society Research Institute (ITTK) from 1998 to 2006, and directed the Information and Knowledge Management Department from 2005 to 2006. He was the editor-in-chief of the Hungarian Journal of Information Society from 2001 to 2006. From 2007 to 2011, he directed the Library and Information Science Department at the University of Szeged. He is the author of numerous studies and popular series, and a popular presenter at professional conferences and events.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Karvalics was born in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary in 1961. He graduated in 1986 from the Eötvös Loránd University with an honors degree in Hungarian literature and history. Between 1985 and 1988, Karvalics taught literature and history at the Martos Flóra Secondary School. Meanwhile, he launched an integrated social science subject experiment at the Veres Péter Secondary School. Between 1986 and 1989, he was a scholarship member of the Scientific Certification Commission at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1995, he earned a PhD in history. In 2006, he won a Fulbright research scholarship and studied at George Washington University and at the Center for International Science and Technology Policy (CISTP) at Georgetown University. He is married and has four children.
