History[edit]
The Wilder School became an independent school at VCU in 2013 when it separated from the College of Humanities and Sciences. The school was named for Douglas Wilder, an Virginian lawyer and politician who served as the 66th Governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994. He was the first African American to serve as governor of a U.S. state since the Reconstruction era, and the first African American ever elected as governor. Wilder is currently a professor of public policy at Virginia Commonwealth University within the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.[2]
