LED-luminism
LED-luminism is a 21st century art trend that was developed by Mattias Sonnenberg and began to take shape in 2012.
The concept of LED-luminism
The concept of LED-luminism was introduced by the author, theater and ballet critic, painter and composer Mattias Sonnenberg, defining LED-luminism as a symbiosis of painting and RGB LED light. LED-luminism is divided into postmodern, abstract and abstract-realistic LED-luminism. As an art trend it differs from previous lighting art related styles like neon art, light-emitting diodes LED art, LED sculptures, light painting, light projection — including projected images on walls and buildings —, digital graffiti, light installations, kinetic art, etc. LED-luminism comes from the Latin word lūmen — light. In the 19th century (1850-1870) luminism was a famous Hudson River School painting style, which was characterized by effects of light in calm landscape painting. The works of the well-known American painters Fitz H. Lane and Martin J. Heade were characterized by realistic sea and landscape views, which are mainly covered by bright light from the sun. The term was introduced in 1954 by John Baur, scholar, artist and director of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The style of French painting in the second half of the 19th century was luminarism, where the depiction of light and darkness has been brought to extremes in painting. The painting technique of Divisionism, which Georges Seurat called chromo-luminarism, was also a representation of light, shadows and darkness, for example in his famous neo-Impressionist painting „Sunday Afternoon on the Grande-Jatte Island” (1886).
LED-luminism styles
LED-luminism began to take shape in Mattias Sonnenberg's three-dimensional postmodern LED-luminism works such as „Taiwan's bounded dreams” (2012), „Jacks go all-in” (2014/2018) etc. In the three-dimensional abstract-realistic LED-luminism „Tahiti mountains” (2019) the red sky was supported by LED lighting through the canvas and on the sides. In the new approach of the abstract LED-luminism style developed in „Space light of the Rocketman” (2019), where abstract art was created on the tinted film or glass illuminated by RGB LED lighting. One rule in abstract LED-luminism is that works must be made in such a way that tinted glass maintains artistic aspects even without lighting.
