LGD Gaming is an esports organization based in Hangzhou, China. Known as LGD, the organization was originally founded in 2009 as a Dota team, but now also fields teams in League of Legends, Overwatch, FIFA Online 4, PUBG, and Fortnite. In 2018, the French football club, Paris-Saint Germain became the main sponsor of the Dota 2 team and the team was rebranded as PSG.LGD. On October 18, 2018 Paris-Saint Germain and LGD would come to together again and collaborate and field a FIFA Online 4 team.[2] LGD is the acronym for Lao Gan Die, a Chinese food sauce brand that until 2011 was the major financial backer of the organization.
Organization[edit]
LGD entered the esports scene in 2009 when the organization sponsored, For The Dream, a team founded by Wu “2009” Sheng, after they had won the Sendi Mutiara Multimedia Grand National DotA Tournament (SMM) during the same year.[3][4] After winning SMM, For The Dream was offered a sponsorship deal estimated at roughly 15k RMB a month. The deal was brokered by a well known industry insider who had received most of his investment capital from a high ranking executive of the Lao Gan Die (LGD)--a hot sauce company. After For The Dream accepted the terms of the sponsorship deal and agreed to rename the team to LGD.
Towards the end of 2011, LGD lost its backing due to financial trouble that saw the broker leave China. However, before the broker left, he gave Pan "RuRu" Jie a list of financial backers who he alleged would provide financial support for the team. Ruru was working with the CDEC (China Dota Elite Community) project back then, but also worked part-time work for LGD back from 2010-2011. Ruru was the team lead for the Dota squad organizing scrims, setting up travel, doing social media, and more.
Due to the lack of funding, Ruru went to the people from the broker's list asking for some capital to pay player salaries. However, the money dried up and Ruru paid the players using her own salary from her full-time position working for an ad agency in Tianjin—as her role at LGD was partly volunteer-based.
By the end of 2011, there was zero money left to support the team and Ruru had to borrow money in order to pay the year-end bonus to the players for their tournament performances. Ruru and the team completely lost contact with the broker who had left and migrated to Australia. Later, a conversation between Ruru and Zhang "xiao8" Ning, their star player, prompted the team to move to Hangzhou, China This would mark the start of Ruru's control of LGD and she has been in charge ever since. Initially, LGD and CDEC were two different operations, but after Ruru took over LGD, the two programs started running under the same banner. On April 25, 2014, LGD Gaming announced[5] that they would form a youth team called LGD.CDEC.[1] They were named CDEC after the 'Chinese Dota Elite Community', an in-house league and the team largely consisted of young talent from that league. In October 2014, LGD.CDEC left the LGD Gaming brand[6] to establish a separate brand called CDEC Gaming
In 2012, Nicholas Yang joined and helped jump start LGD's League of Legends division and later expanded into other games such as Overwatch Contenders, FIFA Online 4, PUBG, and Fortnite. Yang left the organization in 2018 with his last role being that of General Manager who oversaw the daily operation of all of LGD’s teams.
After moving to Hangzhou, Ruru managed to secure a sponsorship deal from Taobao, Alibaba's C2C eCommerce platform—the largest in China today. This sponsorship deal allowed LGD to survive and Ruru registered the current LGD-Gaming company in Hangzhou, which has been LGD’s headquarter since then.
In 2018, Paris Saint-Germain came on board as the title sponsor for the Dota 2 and FIFA Online 4 teams.
