Laurence J. Walsh AO is an Australian dentist and academic who is an emeritus professor at the University of Queensland. His work has focused on dental education, special needs dentistry, infection control, and clinical standards development.
Education
Walsh completed a Bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland in 1983.[1] He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in 1987 under the supervision of Gregory Seymour AM.
He later undertook postgraduate study at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and completed further academic and executive education, including programs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.[2]
Career
Walsh served as Head of School of the University of Queensland School of Dentistry from 2004 to 2013.[2] During this period, he was involved in the development of the Oral Health Centre at Herston in Brisbane and the establishment of regional dental clinics in Queensland.[3]
He served as chair of the Australian Dental Association Infection Control Committee and was President of the Queensland branch of the Australian Dental Association in 2018.[4]
Walsh has served on committees of Standards Australia since 1992, contributing to the development of healthcare-related standards and guidelines.[5] He retired from the University of Queensland in December 2020.[2]
Research
Walsh’s research has addressed clinical applications of lasers and optical technologies in dentistry, biomaterials for dental repair, and preventive dentistry approaches.[6]
According to the University of Queensland research repository, he has authored more than 440 peer-reviewed journal publications.[7] He is listed as the inventor or co-inventor on 19 granted patents relating to dental diagnostics, materials, and microbiology.[2]
Professional affiliations
Walsh is a Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the International College of Dentists, and the Academy of Dentists International.[8]
Awards and recognition
In 2018, Walsh was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to dentistry and dental science education, and to improved health and safety standards through professional associations.[9]
He has also received an Australian Award for University Teaching.[10] In 2025, he was awarded the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award by the Pierre Fauchard Academy.[11]
