LSU Mixon Lyceum Speech & Debate Team (also known as the LSU Speech Team, LSU Debate) is a student-run, individual events (speech) team located at Louisiana State University. The team competes in events which span the areas of public speaking, limited preparation and interpretation.
History[edit]
Alumni of the LSU Speech & Debate has included 1940 debate partners Senator Russell Long and 38th Vice President Hubert Humphrey.[1]
- 1900-1901: LSU's "debating club" is active on campus.[2]
- 1928-1932: Claude Shaver serves as LSU director of debate.[3]
- 1969: Harold Mixon hosts a debate tournament.[4]
- 1972: Harold Mixon hosts annual high school workshop.[5]
- 1980: Harold Mixon hosts LA Tiger Invitational Speech Tournament at LSU.[6]
- 2005: The team's $6,000 budget is frozen after Hurricane Katrina.[7]
- 2007-2008: The team receives $10,000 from LSU Student Government to alleviate travel finances.[8][9]
- 2010: Due to looming budget cuts, the team is listed among several programs that face potential elimination of state funding.[10]
- 2011-2012: During a rebuilding year, the team put focus on acquiring additional funding through the performing arts fee.[11]
- 2013-2014: Former LSU debater and Free Speech Alley Founder Edwin K. Hunter, son of Edwin F. Hunter, donates $5,000 to the team. [12]
Mardi Gras Alumni Classic[edit]
- 1985: 1st Mardi Gras Tournament[citation needed]
- 1992-1993: “The fiscal crisis caused the cancellation of the Mardi Gras Debate Tournament as well as elimination of the debate program last fall. Southern University graciously picked up the tournament to keep the spirit of Mardi Gras alive. After a massive letter writing campaign to the Chancellor from debate coaches around the country, program funds were reinstated in January”.[13]
- 1994-2000: Southeastern Louisiana University hosts Mardi Gras Tournament[citation needed]
- Spring 2001: Mardi Gras Tournament returns to LSU under the direction of Darren C. Goins.[14]
- 2002–present: Mardi Gras Alumni Classic hosted every spring, offering 11 individual events, NPDA, IPDA, and team IPDA debate.[citation needed]
