Early Life[edit]
Leonardo (La'Nardo) Lee Myrick Sr. was born in September 14, 1970 to Charlie and Dorothy Lee Myrick in Kansas City, MO. They owned the 500 Boutique. Leonardo's parents were Kansas City Missouri socialites. They regularly socialized with the likes of Fred Neal of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters, Actor/Activist Fred Williamson and Jim Brown. Leonardo's siblings are Charlie Lee Jr and Berlisha Arjar. In 1976, his parents divorced and Leonardo, his siblings and his mother moved back to her home of Greenwood Mississippi. In Greenwood, MS, Leonardo would learn about business and fashion via his mother's many business and beauty pageants. During his time in Greenwood, MS, Leonardo encountered the prejudice and tough life that many African-Americans endured in a Republican stated that is striving to conserve the racist past. He participated in track and field and gained a love for football. Leonardo cites many early influences that shaped his ideas going forward. From childhood relatives like Charles Ollie of Jackson, MS giving him a respect of self defense. To his aunt Rebecca A. Weathers that worked for Delta Airlines for 40 plus years. Leonardo was shown the hard working attitude and social flair that he would come to embrace later in his life. With his band teacher only known as Mr. Jackson, he gained the respect for Jazz, instruments and music, from his home economics teacher known only as Ms. Malouf, he appreciated culinary arts and most notably, from Pat Lewis, he gained the sense of community and a small idea of home remodeling that shaped him.
The stress of dealing with the racial, economic and judicial unrest of Greenwood, MS took a toll on the Myrick family. Leonardo stayed with his aunt Rebecca Weathers for the school session of 1984 and excelled in track. Still trying to navigate his teen years, he was sent back to Greenwood, where he would stay until his graduation in 1988 from Greenwood High School. A precarious relationship form with Handy T. Campbell. By 1992, Leonard had went through stints of colleges from Mississippi, University of Mississippi and University of Southern Mississippi. In 1994 the racial injustices of a conservative community and the financial hardship of a family that could not support itself resulted in Leonardo and the precarious friend Handy Campbell being incarcerated. With a community shocked that a high school phenom such as Handy Campbell and his potential laden friend Lanardo would be accused of murder. This is not uncommon for African-American in poor neighbors surrounded by oppressions on many fronts. From Superbowl Champion, Ray Lewis to Marion Jones and her BALCO scandal, African-Americans have fell victim to perfectly laden expressive traps. The trial ended in acquittal but left two young men scarred and uncertain. An unauthorized fiction book titled Confederacy of Silence: A True Tale of the New Old South (2002) was written to exploit the pain the two young men endured before, during and after the trial. Leonardo later learned that the fiction book would defame his and Handy's character. But, as white men know very well that in the south and areas where white privilege exist, what could two black boys with financially challenged families do to stop Richard Rubin from writing a book filled with fiction. There was no one to confirm or deny the literacy episodes created by him.
With very little support mentally, financially and socially, Leonardo left Greenwood with his mother to the outskirts of St. Louis, MO to live with Pat Sullivan and his family. After a month, Leonard and his mother relocated to Kansas City, MO. This is where the level of racial and judicial prejudices were hidden in plain sight. Each year, Leonardo struggled to survive the horrible streets of Kansas City's east side. With the money and influence moving from Kansas City, MO to the Grandview , Raytown and Raymore areas, inner cities such as Kansas City, were left with little to no police, fire or community resources.
Drugs, fraud and gangs were a natural evolution for many. Just like the founder of the Blood street organization T. Rodgers, Leonardo had influences through the suffrages of Kansas City and Greenwood Streets. He attribute his love of literature and classical music to the professors of the University of Mississippi. Donald Cole who retired from Assistant Provost and Assistant to the Chancellor for Multicultural Affairs, Associate Professor of Mathematics, and a member of the Chancellor's Executive Staff is another of the great influences on Leonardo. For over 10 years, Leonardo was in and out of courts. His mentor was one of the many attorneys that he meet. Carl W Bussey a defender of many that can not afford representation, became a mentor for Leonardo. His second perchance meeting was with attorney Russell Powell. These friendships began to give Leonardo the knowledge to defend himself against an unjust judicial system that has oppressed many of his kind. In 2004, Leonardo wed Kinnette L. Smith of Ft Wayne, Indiana. After years of friendship, the relationship became a cornerstone for Leonardo future. His connection to entertainment, music and business began to grow. Stints of incarceration created learning sessions. Leonardo meet film maker Troy Barker on one of those sessions. Troy Barker and his passion for story telling, inspired Leonard to tap into his own literary abilities. That relationship help bring the preproduction of Godly Ways into fruition. With letters from Ex-Mayor of Kansas City, MO, Mark Funkhouser, marking the height of Leonard's film production pursuit. That journey includes networking with Len Gibson of the African America Cinema Gallery, Director Leslie Smalls, Entertainment attorney James Madison of Kansas City, MO, famed producer Tom Rooker and more. After 2009, Leonardo began down the road to redemption. With 6 children, it was a must that he begin an entrepreneurial life. The same life that his parents created with The Boutique in downtown Kansas City but were unable to pass those business tools on to their children. He meet mortgage broker Terry D. Tyson in 2004. That relationship took Leonardo into the home ownership world. Learning how valuable it was to own a home was paramount to the next generation. He wanted to pass something down to his children. He wanted to leave a legacy that didn't present such negative episodes of his life in a large way.
