La Malterie
La Malterie is an association based in Lille, in the Wazemmes district. It works in the fields of contemporary music and visual arts. It is a support structure for research and artistic experimentation and includes work spaces (workshops and rehearsal rooms), distribution spaces (concert hall, exhibition spaces), a resource center specialized in the professional status of visual artists. This site is served by the Porte des Postes metro station.
History
La Malterie was created in 1995 by La Stomate, a group of visual artists from different art schools in the region and in Belgium, whose main objective is the diffusion of their production through the organization of collective exhibitions. The site of a malting plant was chosen, an industrial wasteland located in a former brewery.
In September 1999, La Malterie was struck by a prefectural order prohibiting operation for reasons of nonconformity with safety standards, which put a temporary end to all its diffusion activities. The reopening of the broadcasting room was authorized in January 2001 and the workshops were renovated and brought up to standard in 2002.
